Established in Rome, Italy, inthe International Centre for the Study iccrom Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property ICCROM was formed to promote the conservation of all types of cultural heritage, iccrom, both moveable and immovable, and iccrom one of the few organizations of its type with a worldwide mandate.
ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to advancing knowledge in heritage conservation and raising awareness to the importance of protecting cultural assets for better societies. With Member States, its activities touch every region of the world. By cooperating with multiple actors, FAR works to prevent and reduce risks and vulnerabilities. At its core are field-tested methods and tools for protecting cultural heritage before, during, and after a disaster or conflict. FAR enhances coordination in the fields of cultural heritage, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, urban planning and humanitarian aid, to improve local disaster risk governance. Through the FAR, ICCROM organises courses on cultural heritage first aid, specialized trainings and resilience activities, and provides guidance for developing common approaches and standard operating procedures. Finally, in the event of a complex emergency, the FAR programme can mobilise its network of cultural first aiders to assist with emergency response and the early recovery of cultural heritage.

Following an agreement with the Italian government, the Centre was established in Rome in The Centre immediately created a worldwide network of experts and specialized institutions for conserving and restoring different types of cultural heritage. Early activities included the preservation of ancient tombs in the Nile Valley, restoration of mural paintings in the churches of Moldavia, development of the national conservation research centre in India, and protecting cultural heritage following floods or earthquakes in Guatemala, Italy and Montenegro. In the early s, the Centre organized its first courses in the conservation of historic towns and buildings in collaboration with the University of Rome. There followed other regular annual courses on the conservation of mural paintings organized jointly with the Istituto Centrale del Restauro in Rome starting in , on the scientific principles of conservation of objects and materials and on the preventive conservation of museum collections The Centre also established an international library and documentation centre, which has become an indispensable resource for research and training.
