After having his Bankai destroyed, Ichigo Kurosaki reforged his sword and unleashed its true power in the season finale of the first cour of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. The sword Zangetsu has been a constant presence in Ichigo's life since he became a Shinigami, but he needed to learn about the secret origins of his powers before unleashing the true form of his Zanpakuto. Just like every Shinigami, Ichigo has a Zanpakuto, a Soul Sword, which he uses to fight and purify the creatures known as Hollows before sending their souls to the afterlife. Every one of Bleach's Zanpakuto has a unique appearance , power, and personality. Zangetsu's spirit always appeared in Ichigo's inner world a mental landscape as a middle-aged man with long hair and rugged looks, but the two-part mid-season finale of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War revealed that Ichigo actually knew nothing about his sword.

Ichigo, having lost his powers after employing Mugetsu, the Final Getsuga Tensho, against Aizen, sought refuge in Fullbring abilities to persist in his fight for justice and protect others. Due to his mother being attacked by a Hollow while pregnant with him, Ichigo possessed the capability to activate Fullbring powers. Feeling the need to act quickly, Rukia and Renji, along with the captains of Gotei 13, entrusted Ichigo with some of their power. Despite being a temporary power-up, Fullbring Ichigo remained a formidable force to be reckoned with.
