Sunday, May 17th, AM. This is so true. And he had sock puppets, too! So there were multiple accounts being used to destroy this formerly friendly, inviting board. It got so bad at one point that I opened up a temporary forum on one of my domains, and only my invited friends from the IMDb board could join. We used that for a few months, until the troll and sock puppets finally left Still, it is hard to ensure a mostly-positive experience for the vast majority of the participants. For some reason, most human beings have some kind of natural inclination to acquiesce to "echo chambers" and confirmation bias, and social media sites are very good at seamlessly re-enforcing the phenomena using the same algorithms that figure out which advertisements to display to which visitors. There are pros and cons for either way. A nice feature to be sure, but people who rely heavily upon it put themselves in the position of not being able to defend themselves against libel.

The following answers address some of the most frequently asked questions about this transition. We considered many options to preserve the current message boards during our extensive review, but in the end concluded that they no longer provide a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than million monthly users worldwide. The message board software is based on outdated technology that is being phased out across all of IMDb, clearing the way for more innovation for IMDb customers. Message boards are always temporary in nature: content is not meant to be kept forever and can be removed for a number of reasons, including expiration i. There are some interesting discussions with content worthy of being preserved, but that content is better suited to being stored in permanent parts of IMDb such as user reviews, FAQs, trivia, goofs to name just a few.
On February 20 , hundreds of thousands of comments were permanently removed from film fan site the Internet Movie Database, more commonly known as IMDb. But two years ago, IMDb decided to remove the boards. Like many spaces on the internet, the IMDb message boards were plagued by racism, sexism and trolls. Yet despite the bad actors on some forums, the loss of the boards was perceived as a tragic moment in internet history. Hundreds of thousands of people had posted hundreds of thousands of thoughts over almost two decades, and it was all going to be lost. That is, until Jim Smith had an idea. After hearing the news, he set up MovieChat. After chatting informally with some Amazon contacts, he was unofficially given permission to launch his boards. Smith says the most difficult boards to manage are ones that inspire political and religious discussions. There are currently pages of posts.

I was among them: For the past five years, the IMDb message boards have been my go-to spot for reading up on film and TV. Facebook, Reddit and Twitter were no substitution for the rich—and yes, often trollish—discussion on the IMDb forums. Not all films and TV shows have their own subreddit, and more casual users might not take the time to create one. On IMDb, users could click on the page for any program, scroll down to the message boards, and engage in a heated debate. It was user-friendly and anonymous. It contained a community for fans with niche film and TV interests—something that I lacked in the real world as a young adult but found on IDMB. Nowadays, message boards remain an ancient relic to all but the hardcore geeks of the web. But a glance at the IMDb message boards today is enough to paint a picture of the forums in their dying glory—heartfelt exchanges, pointless banter, trolls and all. It was theater of the absurd for the digital age. A moment, please, for the fellow who posted in Jar Jar Binks speech with a matching profile picture.

The entire first paragraph of this review is taken from an essay accessible on "Kibin". Who knows if the troll would have been successful at that. See all reviews. Two years running now there still isn't a practical solution for Windows servers and none in sight for the foreseeable future. I don't believe I've ever submitted an IMDb user profile for archiving, which is something I would avoid, out of respect for privacy and vanity to a lesser extent, basically reserving it for members confirmed to be deceased. I'm sure there's a story there since I would have thought the usual direction, even for a small aggregate number of eventual engineer-patent attorney pairings, would be reversed.
