I managed Intoku last summer, where I thought the food was excellent but everything around the food — service, timing, polish — had gone missing in action some of our food had, too. Then a couple of months ago I went to You Me Sushi , where I was very pleasantly surprised by some decent sushi and sashimi, albeit in a slightly sterile environment. But it was only last weekend, on a scorching Saturday, that I finally made it to Iro. I was originally going to a town centre venue I thought was ripe for reappraisal, but as the day got hotter and hotter I realised I needed something cooler and subtler. And even with a fan going full whack in the corner the room was distinctly on the warm side. The fridge off to one side was full of Ramune, the Japanese soda with a marble in the neck of the bottle, and other soft drinks. And there was a space where you might see boxes of pre-made sushi, but none were on display. It was almost too hot to concentrate, and difficult to divide attention between the menu and the impressive people-watching opportunities afforded by that window on to Friar Street. It was a decent looking menu, though — disproportionately big compared to the little kitchen and fryers behind the counter, although I suspected they might do some of the prep downstairs. Everything you would expect was on there: plenty of variants of sushi, a good selection of sashimi, hot starters — tempura, gyoza and so on — and even some poke bowls. The air outside was still and oppressive, the street quiet, our portable John Lewis fans valiantly humming away. Who in their right mind would go into town for lunch on a day like this, when there was the option of a siesta? The first dishes to come out took about ten minutes, a reassuring interval that told me things were prepared there and then, quickly but not suspiciously quickly. Because Iro is, I imagine, predominantly geared around takeaway everything comes in plastic dishes with no dish for soy and dipping. A small thing, but a bit of a pity.
