Secure, Contain, Protect. This is the unofficial motto of The SCP Foundation, a global organization with the task of securing and containing anomalous Non-Normal creatures and items in order to protect normal civilian life, sometimes across multiple universes. The SCP Wiki is a website, holding knowledge of these items called SCPscataloged, described, and tested in attempts to see how they work, and in rare is secure contain protect real, how to destroy them. The Foundation currently has almost SCPs in containment, with three safety ratings.

What does horror mean to you? Is it the rush of adrenaline that rushes through your veins after a jumpscare? Is it the creeping dread that lingers after an eerie silence in a movie? Whatever your definition of horror may be, in this spooky month of October, where we celebrate all things scary and sinister, I would like to recommend a lesser known avenue of horror fiction found in a particularly niche corner of the internet: the SCP Wiki. I will deconstruct the history and concept of SCP, and explain my personal fascination and love for the project.

The SCP Foundation is the one thing standing between mankind and annihilation. The foundation has taken on lizards, apocalyptic cakes, and much much more. But who are they? What does SCP for? In-universe, this group is an independent organization that operates outside of the control of any government. Their role is to capture and contain things that could harm humanity, either individually or as a whole. SCP , for example, is the aforementioned lizard, which, aside from being pretty huge, hates humans and wants to kill them. SCP on the other hand, which is my favorite, is a selection of cakes. If not eaten, these cakes spawn a new cake, those spawn a new cake, and so on. If left unchecked, the whole planet could suffocate in cake. We are a creative writing website. The Foundation, its anomalies, and everything else that's been written about is fictional. Furthermore, we are not a roleplaying site, and users are asked to not act in-character while conversing with other users. The "memetic hazards" are just random pictures. The security warnings are just to tell the reader how much the Foundation thinks these things are important and scary. This is true for all SCPs like this - you're supposed to read everything. Entries, which are written in the deadpan style of police reports, include SCP, a large yellow underwing moth that only communicates in American Morse code or SCP, an endless, pitch black platform staircase where a distressed child can be heard calling for help. Some entries will cause nightmares, while others are good for a quick laugh. The SCP Foundation has inspired books, music and even a stage show. There are echoes of it in Annihilation , the book by Jeff VanderMeer that was recently adapted into a Netflix movie.
