Fascism aside, the novel is an entertaining, easy read, but it seems unsure of what exactly it wants to be. The prose holds her at a distance, and the result is a book chock full of war, sex, love, death, pain and glamour landing entirely flat on an emotional level. To some, she was a traitor.

From the time Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born in November , anyone who saw her was impacted by her beauty. No one failed to notice her whenever she entered a room. She was adored by her father, a prosperous banker in Vienna, and given every opportunity he could afford including a private tutor beginning at age 4. It would be this beauty that attracts Fritz Mandl to her when she is still a teen after seeing her live acting performance on stage. The Only Woman in the Room. What's important and relevant is how I felt after reading this book. The author presents a cursory overview of actress Hedy Lamarr's amazing life and, in such, makes it utterly un-amazing. Then she meets George Antheil, a famous composer. More than just a talented actress, she also was the wife of a powerful Austrian arms dealer in the s and a scientist in America during WWII. Hedy Lamarr has been the subject of nonfiction books, a documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, which is available on Netflix and there was a memoir published under her name but written by ghost-writers Ecstasy and Me: My Life As a Woman. Her father encourages her to pursue both. Most Historical Fiction is designed to allow the author to create empathy and emotion for the person s of interest. Literature recognizing women's historical contributions in academic areas, such as math and science, has recently been springing up. Fritz became abusive and wanted Hedy only for her beauty. It was more complex than I had realized.

Before she took on the role of Captain Marvel , Brie Larson portrayed a young mother being held captive in a foot by foot shed. Anyone who has seen the heartbreaking film, can see why Larson took home the Oscar, as her powerful performance is what drives the intense plot. Based on the novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue who also penned the screenplay , Joy Larson has been held captive by a man she calls Old Nick Sean Bridgers for seven years in a small shed in his yard.

So blindly plunging into this story I was met with some nice surprises. She was beautiful. When Mandl chose to be in control of every aspect of the wedding including choosing the gown she would wear and the guests to be invited, Hedwig was disappointed but kept silent at the urging of her father. I wanted so much more from this book but what I found was a story that felt intentionally safe, hurried and unfinished resulting from a lack of creative spirit by the author. I think I would really enjoy this book-thx! The book clocks in at pages and I definitely think some more attention to this part of her life would have greatly enhanced the story. I appreciated the self-confidence and pride in her work that shines through but it was difficult for me to feel compassionate or sympathetic towards her. She developed, along with George Antheil, a radio guidance system for torpedoes. This is a novel based on the life of Hedy Lamarr The Hedy Lamarr portrayed in Benedict's novel is deeply introspective; her attempts to help with the war effort are fueled in part by a sense of survivor's guilt.
