Recreating an Arc Reactor based on his father's design and designing an armor similar to Iron Man's, Vanko attacked Stark in Monaco , under the moniker of Whiplash. Though he was incarcerated, he was subsequently broken out and recruited by Justin Hammer in order to use his skills to create a functional advanced armor to compete with Stark's, but Vanko repurposed the armors into the Hammer Drones , hijacking them and the Mark I War Machine Armor , in an attempt to kill Stark and destroy his legacy. He was defeated by the combined efforts of Iron Man and War Machine , following which he chose to end his life by initiating a self-destruct feature within his armor.

Ivan Antonovich Vanko was a physicist and the son of Anton Vanko ; who was bent on getting revenge on the Stark family; becoming the armored supervillain known as Whiplash. Although Ivan was a brilliant physicist just like his father, he also had a history of crime, selling illegal weapons and killing innocent individuals who got in his way. Ivan got into a final confrontation against Iron Man and War Machine and was bested by the two armored superheroes. After Ivan was defeated, he activated the self-destruct feature of his armor , in a desperate attempt to get revenge on the Stark family; in order to kill Tony and put an end to the Stark bloodline; but Ivan failed and his death was in vain. Ivan was the son of Anton Vanko, a Russian physicist who had helped Howard Stark design the Arc Reactor, but who had been subsequently deported from the United States when it became clear that he was working for money rather than for the benefit of humanity. Ivan's father fell into alcoholism and proceeded to abuse the young boy for many years. At some point he was caught selling Soviet grade plutonium to Pakistan and served 15 years in prison. Over the years, Ivan became highly knowledgeable in the fields of physics and mechanical sciences, while adopting his father's hatred for the Stark family. After his father died in misery Vanko vowed to avenge him and constructed an exoskeleton, powered by a miniature arc reactor, to use against Tony Stark in an effort to discredit him and live out his father's revenge. While in custody, Vanko was asked by Tony why he didn't sell his technology to make money. Vanko replied that he wanted to remove Stark's awe from the people and demonstrate that Iron Man could be defeated.

Over the next six months, he reverse engineered a suit of body armor equipped with energy whips, and vowed to kill Stark in order to avenge his father. After breaking into the prison where Stark was being held for his alleged crimes, Vanko killed several guards and attempted to track down and murder Stark and his confidant Pepper Potts. Stark fought off Vanko using a crude suit of Iron Man armor fashioned from parts of various machines around the prison, and forced him to flee. After Stark tracked down the criminal syndicate who framed him, Vanko arrived at their headquarters, intent on finishing off Iron Man once and for all. It was there that Vanko learned that Stark was indeed framed and that the syndicate was hired to destroy Volstok by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, in order to wipe out an activist who was creating anti-Putin sentiments. Despite learning of Iron Man's innocence, Vanko made one final attempt to kill him, claiming that even though he did not destroy the village, his technology did. After the building caught fire, both men were ultimately forced to run to safety, and Vanko made his escape. Stark was later cleared of his alleged crimes, and helped rebuild Volstok. Vanko had no part in it, and instead went to Moscow , approaching Putin's residence in the Red Square and preparing to properly exact vengeance next time around.
