The first story I ever sent out vanished without trace. No response at all. Naively, having sent the work, I had assumed a response would follow. I was braced for a polite rejection. To receive nothing at all was the worst possible outcome. In my mind, it had not only been rejected, but probably dustbinned with a derisive laugh, and perhaps some cynical quip from a literary editor who, for some reason, I imagined to be on his way out to an expense account lunch. I tell this as a cautionary tale — writers may like to think of themselves as sensitive and tortured souls, and some of us may even start out like that, but by the time we get something into print, we have become accustomed to rejection. We are a tough breed. Early literary efforts are fragile creations. We protect them from the world and show them to nobody. Later, we re-read them and are thankful for our reticence. Time and distance exposes their flaws. They are often dreadful. Nobody starts off writing like Jane Austen not even Jane Austen. Exposing work to others is hard, in those early days.
