Joey's Food Locker is not only helping feed those in need but also preparing volunteers for the real world. In less than 10 years, Joey's Food Locker has gone from a small-time food pantry to a major community lifeline. Years later, pandemic fears may have faded, but the need hasn't. And the holidays are especially tough for local families. To help, dozens of students in Natomas Unified pitched in.

Joel Schwieger is a special education teacher at Natomas High School. He's been running Joey's Food Locker for a few years and is usually open the last couple Fridays of the month. Since the pandemic hit, it's a weekly free food giveaway on school grounds. There's no words for it," Natomas resident Roberto Toledo said. She lives alone, she's an older lady, she can't go out, I pick her up and she is very grateful," Toledo said. The school, like all in the state, is closed right now, and all instruction is being done online. But Schwieger got special permission after agreeing to follow social distancing guidelines to ensure his helping hand doesn't stop. Schwieger said the pantry is named after his son Joey, who passed away 10 years ago. He says this is one of the best ways to keep his son's giving spirit alive. In the past two months, the number of people going to the free food locker located at Natomas High School has more than doubled. Since March 13, the locker has served more than 2, people, according to Natomas High teacher Joel Schwieger, who also coordinates food locker operations at the school. The food locker will remain open weekly until further notice, he said. Fred Hammer, an executive pastor at The Crossing Church, said the congregation had been collecting food leading up to Love Natomas, an annual community serve day which had been set for May 2 but was postponed because of the statewide stay-at-home order. The soccer league, for which Hammer also volunteers, also wanted to give back to the community. Young adults ages 18 to 22, who have developmental disabilities, learn skills for independent living and getting a job in the program.

They also get help from people like Jaylin Moore-Barbee, who is a part of the adult transition program with Natomas Unified.
