Kallax unit

There's no kallax unit to what you can do with IKEA furniture. This particular DIY involves taking the standard KALLAX cube shelf unit and turning it into a four-door media cabinet complete with legs, handles and wooden fluted fronts

All you have to do is drill them into place inside the shelf, and add your own handles for a more bespoke look. I am really happy with how it turned out. All three handles have a touch of copper in them to fit in with the current theme in the room, and its good to know that these are quite easy to change if I want to. This shelf is mainly our music station, so I am keeping vinyl records in it which the shelf size is perfect for. On top I have our loving Crosley player — it has a great vintage look and can be closed off as a suitcase when not in use. Next up I might add some legs on it, so stay tuned for updates! Love this!

I love its practicality - it makes fantastic toy storage. But I wanted something that looked just a little more special in our space. So I decided to give our old unit a little facelift or hack, if you will! I was really set on painting our cabinet, because it was a particularly garish shade of green that I had started to hate! Lots of the cheaper IKEA furniture is made of chipboard covered in laminate. I chose to use Dulux Difficult Surfaces primer , which worked really well. Leaving plenty of time between coats ideally at least 24 hours will help your paint to be extra durable and to withstand heavy traffic. This is the time to be patient! So I managed to turn the Kallax handles into something a little more special with a few cheap plywood shapes that I got on eBay. Some wood glue or strong multi-surface glue I used Gorilla glue. Mark the centre of one of your plywood shapes and place it down on a piece of scrap wood. All this does is stop the shape turning as you drill through it. You can see in the pictures below how we set it up.

It's a vibe for every modern household, kallax unit. I used the 21x6 half-round options. Remember to paint both sides of the doors as you will see the inside every time you open the cabinet.

One of the biggest needs I addressed in the design of our family home office was the need for storage. Not just for my interior design materials, but craft supplies for my daughter as well. So to conserve costs, I decided to use some Ikea Kallax shelving units I have had in storage. They were a glossy white when I purchased them, but have taken a beating over the years, so were in desperate need of some attention. To my delight, the units fit perfectly into this room side by side! So I decided to refinish them to make them feel like more of a built-in. I did this by painting them the same color as the walls and adding some finishing details to give them a customized look.

The Swedish retailer obviously offers a range of compatible storage bins — plus baskets, boxes, and organizers, to be exact — but these 14 alternatives will take you beyond the walls of IKEA. Spoiler alert: The bins designed for kids might be the most covetable. Some of our chosen boxes fit those dimensions exactly, while the rest give you a little wiggle room in one or more directions. Have a storage cube source we missed? It comes in a set of six and neutrals like black, beige, and gray or opt for something more colorful like red. Not only are the bins collapsible great for storing away! Love the charm of a rustic look? This classic wood crate is part decor accent, part storage bin. While perfect for year-round use, we love the farmhouse vibes this crate evokes, as well as the unfinished hue which also allows for a personalized staining.

Their clean lines and smooth surfaces are great for many different design styles. Place it on the floor, mount it on a wall or turn it into a desk to transform your living area. KALLAX shelves are available in different sizes and colours and are easy to personalise with a selection of doors, baskets, dividers and more. The Kallax units were formerly called Expedit. Expedit units were a couple centimeters larger than Kallax, but nothing substantial. They just subbed in a new product with a new name. I was so glad to put that little bit of empty space in our closet to good use!
