A Kingdom is the title tier below empire and above duchy , and the most common rank for independent realms. It is generally held by a King ranked character; emperors also usually hold the kingdom title which their capital belongs to de jure. The portrait of kings or equivalent has a golden border. To create or usurp a de jure kingdom title, a character is required to:. De jure duchies within a kingdom may be assimilated into another kingdom over time through de jure drift , and many kingdoms do not de facto control all of their de jure territory at most start dates. For example, in , the Duchy of Toulouse is part of the de jure Kingdom of Aquitaine, but is entirely controlled by the King of France. Thus, if the King of France keeps Toulouse for at least years, that duchy will become de jure territory of France. Time required for complete assimilation may be changed by the player on game rules panel at game session start. A king-tier character will have a Casus Belli for each county in their de jure kingdom they do not control.

A kingdom is a realm of the fourth tier. Kingdoms are the second highest ranked playable realm. Kingdoms are composed of 1 or more duchies. The ruler of a kingdom is usually known as a king. Kings can be vassals of powerful emperor, but are more often independent rulers. One of the counties in each kingdom is the capital and is normally held by the king of that kingdom. If that county's capital is a city or temple then the realm is a republic or theocracy respectively.

To be truly successful in this game requires more than just careful logistical planning of troops and supplies: it also requires navigating the trials of courtly life. Because King is a design keyword it would be a hostile design decision to call these entities "Kingdoms" in CK3 when a the designers do have multiple defensible choices about nomenclature and b there is a nomenclature choice available that does not conflict with how they have chosen to model feudal hierarchy. In a way, "duchy-tier" refers to a size of realm and depth of feudal heirarchy, and "petty kingdom" just means "this dude had a huge ego and called himself something he really wasn't".

Custom kingdoms are named after their creator's primary duchy although they can be renamed with the Customization Pack DLC and belong to the same de jure empire that the ruler's previous de jure kingdom was part of. But, historically, a ruler was free to call himself whatever he wanted; the Byzantine Empire was at some points not much larger than a duchy either, but its ruler still called itself the actually roman Emperor.
