Can someone please explain to me what Delta V is? Everyone talks about it, but I have no clue what it is, it's so frustrating. Moved to Gameplay Questions and Tutorials. Delta-V, or dV as it's sometimes abbreviated, is a measure of the total amount of acceleration your ship can output. There're certain amounts required to get into orbit, to do certain interplanetary transfer burns, etc. Delta is most commonly at least on paper represented by the Greek letter Delta, meaning change. Literally, it's the total change in velocity your ship can possibly produce. Someone else'll have to school you in the exact uses of and calculations to determine it, as I am myself not a very math-heavy user of KSP. I tend to avoid the mathematical side of things wherever I can. I usually see it as a sort of qualifier, determining whether or not a ship is capable of reaching certain places and so forth. Let's say you have a spaceship in the middle of nowhere, standing motionless next to an object. Everything is in vacuum, there's no gravity, but nothing is orbiting. Everything is in an endless void. It's the simplest scenario.

Propellant usage is an exponential function of delta- v in accordance with the rocket equationit will also depend on the exhaust velocity. GreenLight Posted October 24,

Hey everyone, I have a quick question regarding Delta V. A lot of times my rockets wont have enough to make a full burn, and I'll have to use the next stage to complete it, which puts my whole mission out of whack. Any tips for getting more Delta V? For transfer stages, I reccomend using engines with high vacuum ISP. The LV Terrier is a good engine for starters when doing transfers. The RE-L10 Poodle is another good transfer engine. I highly suggest using the LV-N Nerv engine, as it's very good for transfer stages. Keep in mind that it only consumes Liquid Fuel though.

How muchDelta-V does it take to to get from tylo's surface to orbit? I will have a refueling station in orbit AND on the ground, so I just to know how much is required to go between them. I use the chart from this thread. I have not gotten that far out myself yet, but it say a delta-v of is needed, which should at least be close. The vessel will speed up as it descends. I created a few fully reusable, single stage Tylo landers and rocket rovers rocket rover because why use landing legs when you could just use wheels instead and make a rover? Also, make sure that the TWR isn't too low. Also, an important thing to keep in mind is that you might want to completely leave off RCS.

The ship contains a known amount of propellant. Such a diagram is useful since it enables calculation of a launch window , since launch should only occur when the mission is within the capabilities of the vehicle to be employed. Hope this helps. This way you can design your ships carefully and more practicall. Or hover in place against the pull of gravity. Retrieved 10 July Thanks, Blank. Edited December 1, by mhoram. Export Referrals. If you launch straight up then turn sideways and circularize once into space, that's not efficient. Essentially, what all the math boils down to is this: To increase the delta-v of a given rocket, you want either a lighter dry mass which can be accomplished by either adding more fuel or subtracting mass from the payload or a more efficient engine.

So I would like to know how to count the Delta-V in the game, I know that you can use mods like MechJeb to do this but I just think it would be cool if I could do it myself. So if somebody would be nice enough to help me to understand how to do it, and start explaining from the beginning. Thank you.

Some geospatial data on this website is provided by geonames. Or hover in place against the pull of gravity. The time-rate of change of delta- v is the magnitude of the acceleration caused by the engines , i. Essentially, what all the math boils down to is this: To increase the delta-v of a given rocket, you want either a lighter dry mass which can be accomplished by either adding more fuel or subtracting mass from the payload or a more efficient engine. Here you can see how much delta-v your ship must have to go to a place. Posted October 24, edited. Spaceflight boils down simply to moving from 1 orbit to another, which is accomplished by changing velocity. Pick a planetoid you wish to visit. Edited December 1, by mhoram. The larger the circularization stage, the more delta v it actually took to get to space, rendering the first part of my experiment useless. A diagram that shows the required delta- v plotted against time is sometimes called a porkchop plot. Export Followers. Have you any tips to build rockets? View mobile website.
