It is divided into five learning blocks: the word building block, the sentence building block, the paragraph development block, the summary block, and the critical reading block. Each block has an overall learning goal and builds the necessary foundation for the next learning block. The aim of the Kumon Reading program is to develop students' reading comprehension abilities to a point where they will easily be able to read, kumon reading levels, understand, summarize and analyze advanced forms of writing from a diversity of fields. Though the main kumon reading levels of the program is the development of reading comprehension skills, grammar lessons are also incorporated.

Time spent at the study centre allows the Instructor to support your child in their studies and ensure that they are progressing well. Whilst at the study centre, students hand in work that has been completed and marked at home, as well as collecting work for the following days until their next study centre visit. Students come once or twice a week to ensure the Instructor can develop their self-learning and academic skills. Students complete work that the Instructor has set to develop their skills and ensure they are progressing. By the end of level AI, students will learn to use basic expressions that convey intention or attitude and which denote the past, present, or future time of events. They will consolidate skills in reading and spelling Level AI vocabulary and increase reading speed, aiming to read passages of up to words within one minute. Students will learn the structure of simple sentences by applying the knowledge of nouns, verbs, and adjectives mastered in level 2A. Students will identify, distinguish, and use basic expressions that convey attitude or intention such as may or should and will work with expressions in the past, present, and future. A vocabulary section is included, which allows students to review reading and spelling key vocabulary words introduced throughout the level.
