Left 4 Dead is a first-person shooter game developed by Valve South and published by Valve. Set during the aftermath of a zombie outbreak on the East Coast of the United States , the game pits its four protagonists, dubbed the "Survivors", against hordes of the infected. Left 4 Dead uses Valve's proprietary Source engine , with four game modes: a single-player mode in which allied characters are controlled by AI , a four-player co-op campaign mode, an eight-player online versus mode, and a four-player survival mode. In all modes, an artificial intelligence dubbed the " Director " controls level pacing and item placements in an attempt to create a dynamic experience and increase replay value. Left 4 Dead was well-received by the industry media upon its release, with praise for its replay value, focus on cooperative play, and cinematic feel, although some criticized its limited level selection and lack of narrative. As was done with Team Fortress 2 , Valve supplemented the game with free downloadable content. The success of the game led to the development of the sequel Left 4 Dead 2 , which was released in In , all Left 4 Dead campaigns were ported over to Left 4 Dead 2 , with cross-platform multiplayer support between Windows and Mac versions of the game. An outbreak of a highly contagious pathogen nicknamed the "Green Flu" which causes extreme aggression, mutation to the body cells, loss of higher brain functions, and essential zombification of those who catch it begins in Pennsylvania. Considered to be one of the Special Infected, and often referred to as Tank-Lite, the Charger viciously barrels through Infected and survivors alike with no regard for proper running technique. It's not necessarily the muscular design or loud l4d zombies that makes the Tank such a menacing sight, l4d zombies, it's simply knowing just how much carnage he's capable of causing if he manages to get up close and personal with the survivors, l4d zombies. While the main obstacle that players will need to overcome in both Left 4 Dead games is the incredibly fast and dangerous zombies, there are also a few slightly more powerful enemies who they will similarly need to deal with, and these are known as the Special Infected. These zombies have mutated in unique ways to grant them a special ability that can prove to be incredibly dangerous if they manage to use it on a survivor, especially if they're separated from the rest of the team. Luckily, Special Infected zombies will let out some sort of noise to signify that they're nearby, but these are often terrifying screeches or unnerving howls that are guaranteed to send a chill down the spine of even the most seasoned horror veterans. All of these unique enemies are scary in their own ways, but there are several that really take the cake for being utterly horrifying, and it's these enemies that this list is going to focus on today. The Smoker's unique ability is its absurdly long tongue, which it can use to drag in survivors from a distance, and while this might not seem to be much of an issue at first, it's when this enemy appears over a gap or near a car alarm where it becomes a real threat.
