They were riding high on the back of a lengthy and successful American tour.

The anniversary of Led Zeppelin at Knebworth always resonates — Saturday August 11h — just writing that date sends a tingle of excitement because that is the day when it all occurred for a second time back in that field just outside Stevenage all of 44 years ago. On Thursday August 11 I, and thousands of other fans will no doubt be thinking back to that glorious second Zep gig day in the summer of when finally, after all the waiting, Led Zeppelin were back doing what they did best — performing live on stage. With each passing year, the Zep Knebworth legacy grows that little bit more important as they really were some of the days of our lives. Whilst much of it bathes in a rose tinted glow, it certainly succeeds in capturing the pure wonderment of the event as seen through the eyes of a starry eyed twenty two year old fan eager to put pen to paper before it all became a blur. Thousands of fans have stayed on to camp out the week ready for the second concert…. By Friday night the familiar smell of campfire smoke once again fills the air…Unfortunately the night itself is wet and rainy…Morale at this point is not at its highest….

The grounds of Knebworth House near the village of Knebworth had been a major venue for open air rock and pop concerts since In , veteran promoter Freddy Bannister booked Led Zeppelin to play that year's concerts which took place on 4 August [1] and 11 August [2] after the bandleader of the Electric Light Orchestra , Jeff Lynne , turned down the offer to headline the festival. Led Zeppelin had not performed live for two years, since the death of Robert Plant 's son during the band's North American tour , and they had not performed in the United Kingdom for four years. Their manager Peter Grant decided that the band should perform at Knebworth instead of embarking on a lengthy tour, as explained by Dave Lewis:. The whole [Led Zeppelin touring] operation had become too big. Page's experience from the club tour ruled out any small dates. They had played the biggest indoor arena in the UK Earls Court four years earlier. As Peter Grant saw it, they had to come back in the grandest style possible. Knebworth was the answer and after negotiations with promoter Freddie Bannister the 4 August date was scheduled with a second date on hold. The demand for tickets for the first date was enormous, leading to the second date being added. The band's fee for performing was reportedly the largest ever paid to one single act at that time.

By Friday evening there were around 30, people massing around the entrance. Three hours later they were basking in the adulation of the crowd after the final encore, Heartbreaker. What and how Led Zeppelin performed at Knebworth was less important than their appearance. For most it was the first and only time they saw a band that had not played in Britain for four years. I am a cousin of Ronnie Wood, and as a result of him playing support together with Keith Richards in the New Barbarians, I knew that I had a good chance of getting a ticket for the show. These reports all proved somewhat premature. We walked off towards a load of cars talking about Hawkwind and how he got thrown out of the band. However, the license was for only , and Bannister claimed that only , had attended in the first week. When I say feeding them, I mean we were throwing it through one of the windows at them! It came in a laminated gatefold sleeve with a distinctive cover depicting plastic logos of the acts included. Posterity has been kinder to this footage than critics were at the time. As we entered the Knebworth natural amphitheatre I remember my disappointment when the people at the gate took BOTH halves of my ticket. He tried a second time in and was rejected again, turning to Queen before The Rolling Stones offered themselves up. It was infectious. The side stage was good but I wanted to see Zeppelin full on — to take it all in head on. It wasn't until he led the way into "Stairway to Heaven" and "Trampled Underfoot" that roars of appreciation began to echo around Knebworth. We returned to Vancouver with great memories of a great time.

He appeared to be sleeping normally. I thought the laser bow light show was most effective. However, after all the unpleasantness, worry and innuendo, I was scared for the safety of my family. I am a cousin of Ronnie Wood, and as a result of him playing support together with Keith Richards in the New Barbarians, I knew that I had a good chance of getting a ticket for the show. In the first 10 days of release, its sales topped two million. What a day. It was 54 years ago today…. The success of both the Knebworth concerts and this album, of course, proved otherwise. At one point during the Barbarians set I was aware of someone standing behind me. Both of them were totally wasted… I left Lemmy with the other two members of Motorhead and headed back off towards the back stage area to see what I could find. I told Keith that Ronnie was my cousin and he kind of warmed to that and I think he ended up asking more about me than I ever did about him. You can imagine my delight when the guy checking tickets looked at it and waved me through. Sign me up. Jones is so locked in the groove as to be almost unnoticeable and Bonzo solid, but on this mix not such a driving force as at Knebworth 1. Led Zeppelin at Knebworth on the August 11 th was and forever will be the greatest rock performance I have seen and heard.
