Little details like Jiraiya and Tsunade never getting married, and Orochimaru is not being possessed point to a different kind of story, legendary sannin. At the beginning of the Naruto series, fans watch ninja relying on subtle tactics, paper bombs, the set up of traps, and the use of clones or substitution jutsu to quietly and quickly finish any battles. Before the original series began, Jiraiya set the main conflict in motion by training the original members of the Akatsuki. The villain wouldn't go down without a fight; with the last of his strength, he transformed into a massive white snake and nearly defeated his former apprentice.
