I purchased my Leigh dovetail jig about 15 years ago and have upgraded it to function identical to a Leigh D4. It also provides very fine control of joint fit. I use our Leigh primarily for through dovetail joints. The Leigh dovetail jig has gone through some incremental changes over the years including adding the cam-action handles for the clamp bars, improved template holders, and perhaps the most important change, the new support edge guides. The original guide blocks, used to align the sides of workpieces in the jig were small and made of plastic.

I recently bought a secondhand D4 jig and have been trying to learn the ropes. I'm not too happy with how this trial cut has turned out, and I 'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. As shown in the attached photo, I have some pretty significant-- and uneven--gaps from pin to pin. The middle pin is a reasonably snug fit, although not perfect, but the ones to each side have unacceptable gaps. I might guess that this is because I moved the finger assembly too far in when cutting the pins, but I worked up to that setting very carefully, and the joint would not go together when the finger assembly was further out-- presumably because the fit on the middle pin was too tight and prevented it. Honestly, I leigh dovetail jig cut a hand cut dovetail faster than setting up the Leigh Jig. The DVDs that walk you through it are thorough and frankly I watched it once, leigh dovetail jig, went out to the shop and had my first joint cut in about 15 more minutes.
