I had to then use a live usb by changing the boot order and the used timeshift to go back before the updates were installed, rebooted and everything worked as normal. Problem : You got a black screen in place of the friendly graphical login screen at the end of the Linux Mint boot sequence. Don't tell me why but I have found this issue in several installations or reinstallations of Linux Mint and other distributions in previously working systems.
