Story mode consists of pre-made levels built around Sackboy's basic control scheme, and they are grouped into areas, each centering around a theme; the story revolves Sackboy helping various Creator Curators around LittleBigPlanet before facing the Collector, who has been kidnapping and stealing creations. The concept of a game that allowed the player to be creatively ambitious for the console was envisioned after a movie trip to Howl's Moving Castle. Here, players can obtain collectible prizes to use in creating their own levels on My Moon. There are eight areas in Story Mode. Each one is maintained by a Creator Curator. Every theme has a set of levels that are played in order. Completing one level will unlock the next one, and completing all the levels in a theme will unlock the next theme. There are also "side challenge" levels in each theme, which can be unlocked by finding a Level Key in one of the main levels. The Gardens and The Wilderness both have one additional main level, The Savannah has two additional side levels, and The Canyons has three additional side levels, totaling fifty-five levels. Like most other areas it contains 3 levels and 3 challenges but it's also home to the introduction of the game. The Garden is based in Western Europe, specifically England. The Savannah is the second area players visit in the game, ruled over by its Creator Curator , Zola.

The main protagonist of the series is Sackboy , however as LittleBigPlanet 3 came along, several new playable characters came along; OddSock , Toggle , and Swoop. As you travel around and meet new friends, The Collector starts capturing those new friends, and eventually you must confront him and defeat him. This was the first game in the series, and was praised by both critics and fans alike. LittleBigPlanet PSP has most of the core functions of the first LittleBigPlanet , however is missing some minor ones, such as only having two layers, and not being able to take in-game screenshots.
