The upcoming movie will be the franchise's third film adaptation, following the Japanese anime film Super Mario Bros. The latter of caused hesitation from Nintendo to license its properties for decades. Mario creator and video game icon Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in attempting to develop another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service. From there, the two were discussing a Mario film and in January , Nintendo announced that it would work with Illumination and Universal to produce it. As fans of the beloved video game franchise gear up with anticipation, Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo have revealed a brand-new set of posters, which highlights the characters from the film in their animated cinematic outing.
