Maxima is the queen of Almerac , who hoped to make Superman her mate. Oldest child of the Royal family of the planet Almerac , the fiery-tempered Maxima came to Earth in search of a suitable mate, leaving behind Ultraa , her betrothed. She and Superman were genetically compatible; she could give him what no Earth woman could - children. She was infuriated when Superman rejected her offer, saying he had no desire to father despots. Maxima later found herself reluctantly working with Brainiac who had destroyed Almerac with the Warworld. She turned against him, and helped Earth's heroes defeat him, subsequently joining a reformed Justice League for her own reasons after the League saved Almerac from Starbreaker. As a Leaguer, she helped in the fight against Doomsday , and when that version of the League disbanded, she became a member of Captain Atom 's Extreme Justice. She considered both Captain Atom and Amazing Man as potential mates, but neither were interested. During the period of her flirtation with Captain Atom, an angry jilted Ultraa attacked him. Maxima eventually stopped the brawl and sent Ultraa back to Almerac.

She then took her flagship that headed for Earth where Sazu's betrayal led to Maxima making the journey alone.

An Almeracian identified as Maxima joined Superman in his fight against Doomsday but was defeated and remained unconcious until they were rescued by Guardian who took her to a regional trauma center for medical treatment. Because Almerac's population was dwindling, she was expected to do her part to repopulate the planet by choosing a mate and bearing children. Maxima was disgusted by it, and became estranged from her family. Maxima was chosen as a student by Crucible Academy , an intergalactic school which exists to train potential heroes. There, she made friends with other students like Supergirl. During a mission, Maxima was tasked by one of her teachers, Lys Amata with the mission to bring Superboy back to Crucible. When Supergirl put Amata and Crucible in question, Maxima reiterated she trusted their Preceptor and her commitment to peace.

Maxima once ruled a vast intergalactic empire centered on her homeworld of Almerac. For thousands of years, her ancestors had intermarried with races from other worlds, breeding for strength, for speed, and for power. Representing the apex of Almeracian eugenics, Maxima resolved to continue in the same tradition of her people. To that end, she became obsessed with expanding her galactic reach and, most importantly, securing a suitable mate to father an heir to her glorious realm. When Sazu , her personal handmaiden, intercepted a subspace transmission detailing the astonishing feats of Superman in the gladiatorial games of Mongul 's Warworld , Maxima was sure she had found her man. Without further delay, she set out to make the Man of Steel her husband.
