Memory 1rx8 vs 2rx8

Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Rank is a data block which is 64 bits wide without Error Correction Code ECC created using some, or all of the memory chips on a module. The x8 in them specifies the number of banks in the memory module. Higher the number of banks, the fewer the chips in the memory module, the better the reliability and power consumption. Compatibility is generally not an issue in most cases. But you should go through the motherboard manufacturer's guide of supported RAM modules just to make sure if they are compatible or not. But if it is only the 1Rx8 and 2Rx8 in concern, they may be compatible with each other but it's best to check the motherboard manufacturer's list of compatible RAMs. Please note we fit 1. New Haswell CPUs require this and using 1. Dual-rank 2R modules appear to the system as if two memory modules were inserted in that memory channel, which may cause compatibility issues if you have multiple such modules on the same channel.

Single Rank Memory can be memory with chips on only one side of the memory module stick of memory or chips on both sides of the module as long as the chips are in one rank that is accessed while writing to or reading from the memory. Dual Rank Memory is basically like having two Single Rank chip ranks on one memory module, with only one rank accessible at a time. Quad Rank Memory is, effectively, two Dual Rank Chip sets on one memory module, with only one rank accessible at a time. See Below for Examples. However certain systems have better performance with multi rank memory due to onboard memory controllers.

A large number of banks means fewer chips in the memory module , which improves its reliability and power consumption. The main difference between 1Rx8 vs 2Rx8 memory rank is their data block arrangement. The 1Rx8 memory-module has only one data block with 64 bits, whereas 2Rx8 has two data blocks, and each row contains 64 bits. Therefore, the faster memory-module is 2Rx8.
