My first breath was of Indian air. When you are born into an army family, there is no real place that one can call home, but nothing can take away from the fact that I was born in Kashmir. My father, James, was born in what is now Pakistan, as was my elder sister, Aelene, while my mother, Thyra, spent part of her childhood in the Himalayas. My early childhood was spent in Hong Kong and Malaya [now Malaysia]. We came back to England when I was eight. I was a noisy brat, a show-off. I found everything funny.
