Originally a church, later a mosque, the 6th-century Hagia Sophia — dates back to the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great. It was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years. This was my first view of the famous structure, taken from my hotel room in Istanbul, Turkey. The Bosphorus Strait can be seen middle right.
