The Elytra is an Item that was added in Update 1. It is a transportation item which allows the Player to glide. Elytra can be equipped in the Chestplate Slot; once equipped, the Player can jump from any height and in midair the direction can be controlled by looking up, down, left or right. Looking up temporarily increases the Player's altitude, but looking up for a prolonged duration causes the Player to stall in mid-air and descend at a faster velocity. An Elytra has Durability points, and consumes one point per second. Once Durability is exhausted, the item will turn into a "Broken Elytra" which has a tattered texture. An Elytra which has lost durability can be repaired by placing two pairs of damaged Elytra in a Crafting Table together.

Elytra are equipped in the chestplate slot, either by placing the item directly in the slot, by pressing use item while held in hand , or by firing a point-blank dispenser at a target. They are gray in color by default, but they adopt the design of any cape the player is wearing. They maintain their in-world texture design even when they're broken or enchanted. To fly, the player must press the jump key while falling, and the elytra spread apart like a beetle's elytra. The player can aim their view around to turn or adjust their pitch. Losing altitude increases speed, and gaining altitude decreases speed. Firework rockets can be used to increase speed.
