Mizuno first introduced Boron Steel into their irons with the JPX Forged and I have been telling anyone who would listen that these were one of the standout irons over the last two years. Now their time has come and the replacement Mizuno JPX Forged continues to use the stronger Grain Flowed Boron Steel to deliver faster ball speeds from a forged head. The real difference is in the face which now uses a variable face thickness instead of a consistent one and this saves This weight is then placed around the edges of the PowerFrame chassis to increase the MOI and make the club more resistant to twisting and more forgiving on off centre hits. Like before the cavity in the back gets smaller as you go down the set until it is completely closed in the wedge. Aside from the matt finish to the head there are very few other differences and that is a good thing because the previous model was pretty much perfect. The JPX is a perfect blend of feel, forgiveness and style that will appeal to single figure players who play blades, right up to mid-handicappers who prefer a forged iron. If you were being really picky you might find the 4-iron gives a slightly more hollow sound due to the larger cavity, but it still performs very well. For others it may be worth considering swapping in the JPX Hot Metal 4-iron for that extra forgiveness and higher launch angle. The sole features a cambered grind with a bevelled leading and trailing edge that skips through the turf very easily and plays a little thinner than it looks. The flight is medium to high with a good level of penetration and decent spin on landing which all better players will approve of. To me this is the style of head that makes the best use of the stronger Boron Steel in Mizuno's range and going forward will still be one of the irons to beat in the market.

We tried a few shafts, and by far the best feel for my swing was the C-Taper-Lites. Not to mention the fact, that their matte silver look is super sexy.

The JPX Forged takes a balanced approach throughout and is relatively compact into the scoring irons. JPX Forged sole widths and face gauge will appeal to many better players looking for just a touch of help. But the straighter lines and reinforced framework are very current, giving the Tour a really playable look and the ability to perform on off-centre strikes. The JPX Tour is very compact through the set.

The JPX was eight feet to the left pin high, and the AP2 was about six feet pin high to the left and about a yard further. I really liked them and was doing very well with them, I was able to hit the end very well and the were so forgiving. Mizuno irons have their fanboys raving about their unsurpassed feel and the grain-flow forging process that was at the core of this feel. With the full fitting clocking in around 15 minutes, there is plenty of time to hit multiple shaft combinations allowing players the ability to either decide by numbers if the facility is using a launch monitor , or by a combination of feel and flight. Initially they felt nice but after a few months I got to know them a lot better. I'm used to a hit and then a foot roll out with the previous clubs. I, too am about to pull the trigger on some new steel, and thinking it will be between the z and Tour. Accuracy is the indian and not the arrow, but being able to predict how a ball will react based on the club you choose and the swing you put on it is where the real strength of an iron lies. Being able to blend these lines effortlessly is something that golfers could really see some benefit from, if that is a path they want to go down.
