A backpack that was bought for a two week trip to Japan that has joined us on our adventure of a lifetime. Firstly, myself and Josh have pretty good experience of backpacks, as we do both own two other backpacks. Two small 35 litre bags that served us well for a two-week trip around Italy. Two 50 litre bags, which were adequate luggage companions for a month in Thailand. So began the search for new backpacks. Criteria: slightly bigger, easy to get in to without emptying the contents from the top and less clunky. We read a lot of reviews, like a lot. For me, having travelled with a backpack before I knew I would again, but we read a lot re backpack vs. Josh has since opted for the same backpack as me, as he nearly abandoned said suitcase on multiple occasions. One of the biggest barriers to entry for fledgling campers is the often-prohibitively expensive price of good kit, especially kit designed for use outside of the summer months. For spring, fall and winter you need equipment that can supply real warmth, and nothing puts newcomers off going camping again like an uncomfortably cold first experience. The Microlite is ideal for both cold-weather camping neophytes, and those who are more experienced but operating on a budget and in need of a new bag. It might not be as featherlight, packable or quite as sumptuous feeling as a down-filled sleeping bag, but it is certainly light enough to be taken on backpacking adventures, and is more than capable of keeping you warm in most conditions likely to be encountered during the vast majority of the year in non-alpine terrain. Available in versions to suit left- or right-handed people , the two-way zip can be opened from the bottom or top to give you ventilation options and is backed by a storm flap to keep breezes out. It boasts a good, shaped hood, which can be pulled tight around your face, and has inner pockets for keeping valuables safe, or phones warm and handy.

What I love about the Mountain Warehouse Traveller Rucksack is the comfy hip belt and the adjustable, padded shoulder straps, which mean that the bag fits me perfectly and the weight is spread across my whole body. He has circumnavigated Ireland by kayak and cycled across the Sahara. It feels so much better sleeping on the inflatable mat. Demi 29 January at am.

Keen on low-tech but good gear, Jasper is an advocate of slow adventures by paddle, pedal, saddle, boot and sail. This was a game changer for me — no more rummaging through the entire contents of my bag to find that missing sock! I think the mats are an invaluable addition to camping! Try and stock up on those miniature toiletries before your trip — you can always buy stuff when you are there, but they take up less room and are lighter than normal sized bottles. Before I left for my first backpacking trip several years ago, I did a ton of research. There are zips which can be padlocked together pretty easily — but the rucksack itself is made from canvas type material which could be slashed. Yes, I want one for underneath my bed actually!
