The program was originally commissioned for FX Australia as its first original drama production, [4] but instead launched in Australia on Showcase following the closure of FX Australia between commission and premiere. On 9 October , FX and Foxtel renewed the series for a second season which premiered on 12 September Set within the suburbs of Sydney , [11] Raymond "Ray" Shoesmith Scott Ryan is a hitman for hire who makes a life out of balancing his criminal activities with his obligations to friends and family. He tries to be a father to Brittany Chika Yasumura , his daughter with his ex-wife, Jacinta Natalie Tran , a loving boyfriend to Ally Brooke Satchwell , and a good caretaker to his terminally ill brother Bruce Nicholas Cassim. Ray also covers for his friend Gary Justin Rosniak when needed, and follows orders from his boss Freddy Damon Herriman without question. Ray deals with criminals and monsters in his own violent way; this behaviour, however, starts to take its toll and affects his relationships. Short-tempered contract killer Raymond "Ray" Shoesmith is asked to help his best friend Gary after his wife Tatiana finds his urine-related pornography stash, so he pretends the tapes are his and lets Tatiana berate him. While out with his daughter Brittany, two youths intentionally knock into her and curse in front of her when Ray confronts them, so he has her wait in the car and beats them when out of sight. Walking back, he encounters Ally, a woman he met earlier while walking his dog, and the two exchange numbers.

Los Angeles Times. It's the most out-of-control we've seen him, which just drives home how much of a Berserk Button child endangerment is for Ray. It develops to the point where, when Dave is mortally wounded in the final episode, his last request is for Ray to look after his son. He might be right. Berserk Button : Ray has a few small ones, namely blatant disrespect and insulting his family or loved ones, but threaten or harm a child around him, and Ray will go out of his way to destroy you and not give a damn about the consequences. Mood Whiplash : In keeping with the show's Black Comedy tone, there are many scenes involving gunfights or violence which are extremely intense, before something undeniably funny will occur usually as a result of someone's stupidity. Ray Shoesmith Scott Ryan is a reserved and laconic man.
And while we know where the road ends for, the air of tragedy surrounding him is a whiff from the future and a cloud in the present. The juxtaposition of conflicting yet at the same time oddly reconciled personality traits, that constitute Ray's complex persona, make for fascinating viewing. One of the biggest draws is Ray's attitude and how nonchalant he is about everything. He also has a new relationship with Ally Brooke Satchwell , a paramedic whom he met while out walking his dog. He approached a parent of Brittany's classmate who was bullying her, which only lead to them calling the police on him despite trying to be as casual and friendly as he could. Slice of Life : Much of the show leans on the contrast between Rays' normal life and the violent world he is a part of. What it is, is simple enough. Ray invites her to try a move on him and she quickly sweeps a leg, takes his back and chokes him out. Really any show that reinforces aggressive male stereotypes bores me like militant feminist shows also bore me, but this is well made and well acted.
The question is interesting, I too will take part in discussion. Together we can come to a right answer.
