The goal of the materials engineering undergraduate curriculum is to provide an understanding of the underlying principles of synthesis, characterization and processing of materials and the interrelationships among structure, properties and processing. The program prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of industries, mse uoft, as well as for advanced study in this field. Mse uoft also provides students with the opportunity to broaden their education in engineering and science or to expand their knowledge in a particular technical area by offering course foundations in four core areas: biomaterials, mse uoft, manufacturing with materials, sustainable materials processing and design of materials including nanomaterials.
The following collaborative specialization is available to students in participating degree programs as listed below:. MSE's research, education, and applications expertise in advanced materials engineering enables the development of new and sustainable technologies, creating innovative solutions for the global environment. As a world leader in materials applications and processing, the department's commitment to excellence fosters innovative thinking in its students, leading to the development of brilliant minds and ideas that make a global impact. MSE research and studies address the general problem of understanding structure-property-processing-performance relationships in materials. Web: mse. The MASc program provides students with an opportunity to pursue advanced study and research with the guidance of experts in their respective fields.

Materials science is the study of the structure, properties and applications of all types of materials including metals, ceramics, glasses and polymers. Currently many exciting scientific developments are in the materials field. Notable advances have been made recently in studies of amorphous metals, the quasicrystalline state, liquid crystals, semiconductors, nanostructured materials, high critical temperature superconductors, biomaterials, high strength polymers, materials processing techniques such as ion implantation and laser melting, and in new categories of engineered materials such as advanced industrial ceramics or composite materials. Materials science is interdisciplinary, drawing on the basic sciences of chemistry and physics and on more applied subjects such as metallurgy, ceramics and polymer science. Its tools and techniques include electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, surface analysis using Auger emission spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. Other materials science courses are available to students having the prescribed prerequisites and the approval of the Undergraduate Student Counsellor. The specialist program in Materials Science is coordinated jointly by the Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering. For further information on the program, consult the undergraduate coordinators for both departments. Traditional Land Acknowledgement. We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates.

Practical Experience Requirement - As described in the beginning pages of this chapter, students are required to have completed a total of hours of acceptable practical experience, before graduation, normally acquired during summer vacation periods. The PEY Co-op program requires that qualified students undertake a paid, full-time month continuous work period with a cooperating industry. Details are described in the beginning of this chapter. More information can be found in the PEY Co-op section of the calendar. For example, the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering offers several Minors and Certificate Programs which require third year Technical Electives courses in various programs.
I was able to refresh my analytical toolbox, taking computation and math courses relevant to my field of research. After 6 years in the industry, the MEng program was a great way to onboard back into academia. I could also see it working well the other way around, preparing students for industry with higher level courses and projects. U of T Engineering student pitches green hydrogen startup at international competition in Berlin. This machine learning method aims to speed up the design of next-generation biomedical implants and aerospace materials. In Memoriam: Gerald Heffernan

MEng students must successfully complete a total of 2. Present the second seminar for MSEH 0. Applicants to the flexible-time PhD option are accepted under the same admission requirements as applicants to the full-time PhD option. Students may select an additional course 0. Topics must be approved by the steering committee of the Institute of Sustainable Energy. The required thesis is based upon research work carried out in the department. Applicants must also satisfy the Department of Materials Science and Engineering MSE 's additional admission requirements stated below. Typical subjects in chemical metallurgy involve a study of the equilibria existing during the reduction of oxides with carbon and metals, properties of iron and steelmaking slags, kinetics of high-temperature reactions, mathematical modelling of metallurgical processes, process metallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. The general Qualifying Examination must be scheduled and taken within 12 months of initial registration. Please consult the department for a listing of courses being offered this year.

Course Changes. What our MEng students say? Fourth-year has core courses in environmental degradation of materials and materials selection in design plus technical electives in the four core areas for technical electives outside the calendar list provided please consult with the Associate Chair, Undergraduate. In MSE, these courses are taken in 2nd and 3rd years. The program prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of industries, as well as for advanced study in this field. Students may double-count one course at most towards any MSE emphasis, or towards any other emphasis in the Faculty. Subsequently, to earn the emphasis, students must successfully complete four additional half courses 2. Students normally complete the requirements in nine sessions three years. These must include at least one core course; the remaining courses must be selected from the list of elective courses. The thesis must be presented at an oral examination. More details concerning this course will be provided by the Coordinator of Graduate Studies once admission to a graduate program has been confirmed. Graduate Studies U of T is the number one ranked school in Canada for Materials Science - learn from our world-renowned researchers to earn one of the most competitive graduate degrees in the field. All students wishing to undertake graduate research in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering must successfully complete a two-day intensive occupational health and safety training program which will normally take place during the week immediately preceding the commencement of graduate courses. Three half courses 1. A project may be substituted for 1.
