The director, James Cameron , felt a pop song would be inappropriate for the film, but agreed after hearing the demo. The final version was arranged by Afanasieff. The music video was directed by Bille Woodruff. Dion performed the song to honour the 20th anniversary of the film at the Billboard Music Awards. Before the release of the film Titanic , studio executives worried that it would be a commercial failure. Horner waited until Cameron was in an appropriate mood before presenting him with the demo. Cameron also wanted to appease the anxious studio executives and "saw that a hit song from his movie could only be a positive factor in guaranteeing its completion". The producer Walter Afanasieff was not impressed with the demo, finding it meandering and dreary, but agreed to arrange and produce the studio version. According to the music executive Tommy Mottola , Dion recorded her vocal in one take, and that demo is what was released in the film. However, Dion re-recorded the song for her album release after the film's release and its success. This was an edited version with a few note changes at the end of the song.

But fate wanted the world to have this song. There are different theories as to why Cameron included a modern pop song at the end of his period drama, even though he was staunchly against the idea. Titanic executive producer Jon Landau refuted this claim, insisting that Cameron was always willing to consider a pop song. It incorporated elements of his score and promised to fit seamlessly into the movie. Horner told Jennings the movie centered on the character of Rose DeWitt Bukater, a Titanic survivor looking back on a love affair decades later. Cameron partly drew inspiration for Rose from Beatrice Wood , an artist nicknamed the "Mama of Dada," whose autobiography the director was reading during Titanic 's development.
