Among the pantheon of shonen super powers, One For All has been one of my favorites since its introduction. It's not that the power was inventive in a utilitarian sense — super strength is about the most bog standard power imaginable for a superhero. Rather, it being a power handed down from one generation to the next makes it the perfect thematic fulcrum for My Hero Academia. In a story where the very first moral was that acting in the face of danger inspires bravery in others, what better power is there than one that changes hands, accumulating and carrying on the spirit of all who carry it? More than simply a cool power for our protagonist to wield, One For All is a key part of the story's foundational ethos, so it's only fitting to get an episode dedicated to hashing out its nature and purpose. Unfortunately, One For All — and the characters attached to it — has gotten bogged down in a whole lot of gobbledygook along the way.

If One For All is transferred to a person who already has a Quirk, the excessive strain on their body will cause accelerated aging and premature death. Thus, Midoriya and his predecessor Toshinori Yagi All Might were the perfect choices, because they were both born quirkless. There is one big plot hole in this story: the vestiges of the previous users say that they only discovered this fatal flaw recently. This means that both the choice of Toshinori and that of Izuku were not motivated by this condition, but were incredibly lucky. This would not have been possible if the seventh user, Nana Shimura , had not chosen a quirkless boy as her successor, by mere chance. The only other user who did not die in battle, the fourth, died of old age when he was merely forty years old. Similarly, All Might's meeting with Midoriya was completely random, and he just happens to be one of the few people in the world who can handle One For All without harm.

Not only does Izuku realize that he was never meant to be One For All 's successor, he realizes another terrible fate for his mentor based on Sir Nighteye 's Foresight : Toshinori Yagi will eventually die. Although he knew that everyone eventually dies, that fact cut Izuku through like a knife. Toshinori tells Izuku that when he met him, he told Nighteye about him, but Nighteye was vehemently against Izuku becoming One For All's successor, which further drove them apart. Toshinori and Nighteye argued on the phone regarding Izuku, Toshinori argued that Izuku was intent on saving others while Nighteye argued that intentions were not good enough since there are more capable candidates with the same intentions as Izuku. However, Toshinori stated that Izuku is Quirkless which made him a befitting candidate over the others. Toshinori says that after their heated debate over the succession of One For All, Nighteye took it upon himself to cultivate Mirio Togata , whom he believed to be the truly appropriate successor. Izuku asks Toshinori when Nighteye used his Foresight, when did it say that his death would occur and whether Nighteye's Foresight can be changed.

Season 6 is nothing short of a triumph for My Hero Academia. After a lackluster fifth season it introduces two new story arcs, Paranormal Liberation War and Dark Hero, match the best moments of the entire show to date — and even surpass them at times with stunning action animation and some emotional character moments that show how much these young heroes have come. This is My Hero Academia at its peak. Heroes as complacent celebrities who care more about sponsors than saving people but without the depravity of The Boys and a public that treats them as idols or just cops are ideas that have always been slowly brewing, and season 6 brings every plotline and theme to an explosive boil. The first half of the episode season contains some of the best action My Hero Academia has ever delivered, with stunning visual compositions and fluid fight scenes that display a wide variety of powers — whether that is Shigaraki pulling his best Tetsuo in Akira impression, or Dabi and Todoroki pulling a new version of Zuko versus Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is the darkest My Hero Academia has ever been, with brutal deaths and irreparable damage done both to our heroes and the world they inhabit, and season 6 pulls off those emotional moments masterfully. We get scenes with the emotional payoff of All Might's last stand at least two or three times throughout the season, with huge repercussions like Dab's reveal to the world, and they work because the story has spent over episodes building up to this.
