The path of a shinobi is filled with pain. Naruto and his companions, as well as his enemies, discover this repeatedly throughout Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. For some, this reality made them stronger characters. However, for others, the backstory never clicked, or when the role did start to click it was too little too late. The Naruto universe is incredibly unsafe no matter what village one is from or which important individual they align with. Powerful shinobi constantly jockey for dominance and prestige, which puts them in harm's way. Many times, the series' battles have left its ninja gravely injured or on the brink of death. In some instances, they were damaged so severely that they never fully recovered. Gauging the worst injuries of the anime is essential since it helps to illustrate how much the characters stood to lose in any given battle and the plot armor they may have benefited from. They beat both her and Lee severely, with Sasuke only waking up after his guardians had collapsed.

The "Pain's Assault" arc is among the most epic and memorable storylines in Naruto Shippuden. Nagato and his Six Paths of Pain turn the Hidden Leaf village into a smoldering crater after taking out several of the village's most powerful Jonin, but his reason for coming to the village was nowhere in sight. No one in the village was willing to give him up, and though they all fought hard to protect their friend and fellow ninja, not even Naruto's mentor Kakashi Hatake was strong enough to survive the battle against Pain. Nagato and Naruto not only have a lot in common, but given their different approach to achieving peace, there is plenty of enmity between them. An epic showdown between the two was inevitable and, though Naruto fought against the Deva Path of Pain, which Nagato controlled, he and Nagato's physical body never actually battled. There's a good reason for that, but first let's unwrap who Nagato was, and how he and Naruto are related by more than the Uzumaki Clan bloodline. During the war, Nagato watched as Hidden Leaf ninjas infiltrated his family home to steal food. When the ninjas discovered the family trying to escape, they attacked, killing both of the boy's parents in front of him. This activated the Rinnegan and, in his grief, he killed the ninjas and ran away to become an orphaned beggar. Due to the scarcity of resources because of the war, no one would help him.

First, he had to make the boy actually survive his wounds. Naruto was almost 4 years old when he lost his sight. On top of this, most of their personalities were frustratingly grotesque. One of the best characters to exemplify this ideal is Shikamaru. Then fans heard it; the sound of a thousand birds chirping. After releasing most of the Nine-Tails' chakra, Naruto risked transforming into the Tailed Beast without any hope of returning to himself. This might be because the series wanted to portray Naruto as kind and big-hearted as possible -- juxtaposed to Sasuke's revenge-focused nature -- but in this case it really didn't make much sense and felt like a deus ex machina. Crippled by past battles and unable to move on his own, he is the inheritor of the Rinnegan and one of the few remaining apprentices of Jiraiya. His worldview was twisted by the loss of his close friend Yahiko, who acts as the main body of the Six Paths.

Gaara delivered on all fronts. There was nothing left for him- nothing left to live for. Every great story needs a little love. Sadly, team 10 grew more after his passing. He proves not every ninja needs fancy jutsu. This is another event that falls on Sasuke as much as Naruto, but Naruto could've easily avoided this situation. The plot twist bolstered Sasuke and emphasized his ability to grow as a ninja.
