In , this seemed like a good idea: Compete the Roger Moore Bond series by bringing back Sean Connery to the role of James Bond, via a remake of one of his most popular Bond movies, Thunderball. More than 25 years later, that good idea is better remembered for the nostalgia factor than for its story quality, as Never Say Never Again is more miss than hit in its attempt to go the psychological-thriller route with a spy who works best in the middle of the action than waiting for the action to come to him. Bond is called back into active field duty, following a stint at a health club and a nod to Thunderball 's opening scenes. From there, Bond is not so much hot on the heels of the villain Largo Klaus Maria Brandauer, an inspired choice but rather leisurely globetrotting around the world until he finds him in his crosshairs. That buys him time to become the target of the film's most interesting character, and SPECTRE's number-one assassin — the lethal, sexy and disturbing Fatima Blush, played by Barbara Carrera, a girl born to be in a Bond movie. She provides the sparks that Kim Basinger's wounded Domino, Largo's captive mistress, does not. Director Irvin Kershner doesn't know how he wants to treat his hero, and Bond should never be the least interesting element in his own movie. You can tell Kershner wanted to do more, and he expresses as much on the DVD commentary, citing his leading man's age as a cause for his more leisurely approach to the proceedings.
