Its fourteen members include the flagship public universities of ten states, three additional public land-grant universitiesand one private research university.
Texas and Oklahoma wanted to join the SEC's party , and the nation's richest and most powerful conference was willing to admit entry. Surely those two Big 12 schools aren't the only universities that would like a seat at the SEC's table. By adding Texas and Oklahoma, the SEC showed a desire to expand when there were schools presented that the league wanted. The Seminoles fit nicely into the SEC's footprint and deserve another look. Yes, they're struggling in football, but top to bottom, this is a strong athletic department. Better late than never. Dealing a crushing combination to the Pac on Friday, Aug. Warren, File. Conference realignment has widened the recruiting footprint for Power Five college football programs long before many teams open play in their new league homes. Oklahoma and Texas accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference back in and programs have been adjusting ever since. The dominoes continue to fall, with the SEC and Big Ten getting stronger, the Big 12 expanding, the Pac left as a shell of its former self and the Atlantic Coast Conference facing angst from the likes of Florida State. The Big Ten has seen the most significant shift, at least in terms of geography. Realignment also has made conference stability a more critical recruiting piece as young men try to figure out exactly what they are getting into. The ACC has had talks about adding Pac members California and Stanford — Gorney said that would be an upgrade for both schools — but the ACC has not agreed to anything at this point. But that impact might be lessened if a program such as Florida State leaves. And the longer uncertainty looms, the harder it is to recruit. The new schools were not in Power Five conferences last season. Oregon immediately became a more attractive destination once it joined the Big Ten. Nebraska, a Big Ten program that has seen its influence shrink, could regain some of its West Coast reach that landed the Huskers greats such as Jarvis Redwine, Steve Taylor and Lawrence Phillips from California in past generations. Gorney said a downside could be the newest Big Ten schools running into problems when West Coast recruits consider braving the cold and snow late in the season.
The SEC still has time to figure things out, and Sankey has indicated the conference is going to take its time to do so.
The SEC has already embraced the change to a degree by banishing divisions and moving to a methodology that places the top two teams in the conference in the championship game. But there may be more, more dramatic changes in the pipeline. The SEC is one of two Power Five conferences, the other being the ACC, that plays an eight-game conference schedule, with a customary tune-up game before Rivalry Week in many cases but not all. The SEC will continue that format in part in , with the SEC dictating eight conference games and one team from what is now deemed the Power Five or a major independent program. However, it is merely a stop-gap season for the SEC as it determines a longer-term plan for the future of conference scheduling. As commissioner Greg Sankey said in a June release :. It will also provide additional time to understand the impact of an expanded College Football Playoff and engage with our media partners as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling.
Many schools released their own statements, all reacting with excitement to the news and lauding the strong athletics programs in the conference. We look forward to a productive and successful future together beginning in Their additions will further enhance the already rich academic, athletic and cultural legacies that have been cultivated throughout the years by our existing 14 members. We look forward to the Sooners and Longhorns competing in our Conference starting in the academic year. In the statement, Sankey lauded the unanimous decision of the schools to vote to allow membership to the two schools.

SEC presidents voted on Thursday to admit Texas and Oklahoma into the conference , completing a whirlwind process that began last week and formally setting the stage for another round of Football Bowl Subdivision expansion and realignment. The vote was unanimous, the group said in a statement. Katherine Banks to vote in favor of adding the Longhorns and Sooners, the Aggies' former Big 12 rivals. The effective date is July 1, , the conference said, with athletic competition set to begin in the academic year. The Texas and Oklahoma board of regents will meet on Friday to officially accept the invitations. With this last hurdle cleared, the focus for the SEC now shifts to how quickly — and at what financial cost — the conference can add Texas and Oklahoma. While both sides have said the programs will honor the current Big 12 grants of media rights contract, which concludes in , the schools are expected to come to a buyout agreement with the Big 12 to leave in advance of that deal's expiration.
