One of the joys of Nintendo's Switch is how it marries the company's home console heritage with its equally prestigious handheld line. Ask anybody over the age of 30 to name a handheld system and "Game Boy" will likely still be the first answer; the name became synonymous with portable gaming just as home consoles were routinely referred to as "Nintendos" back in the day. Younger generations, though, are more likely to name the unlikely upstart that stole Game Boy's portable crown and permanently ousted that mighty brand name from Nintendo's lineup: Nintendo DS. It's strange to think back to a time when the Nintendo DS — that odd-looking folding system — was positioned as a 'third pillar' alongside GameCube and Game Boy Advance. The best DS games reflect just how unstoppable Nintendo's dual-screen system was. The handheld console launched in and was supposed to sit between the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, although it didn't take long for the DS to eclipse both. As it stands, the Nintendo DS has shifted over million units, making it the most successful handheld console of all-time. Sorry, Nintendo Switch! Perhaps its popularity has something to do with its fantastically diverse library — honestly, this list of the 25 best Nintendo DS games only scratches the surface, and with many of us still clinging tight to our DS Lites or DS classics, it's good to know we can dip back into a favorite any time we want. As you can imagine, slimming down that number to a mere 25 has been hard work, but we've done it: here are the best DS games of all-time, from Zelda to Phoenix Wright. Played with the DS held vertically, Hotel Dusk feels like a virtual book where you read engaging dialogue but can use your stylus to traverse the titular hotel and solve numerous clever puzzles. One of the most impressive aspects of Pocket Paradise is not only its distinctive isometric visuals but just how similar it is to the original Xbox release. Set three years after the events of the DS original, the plot is delightfully absurd and focuses on returning Doctor Derek Stiles, who is struggling to use his famed Healing Touch which allows you to slow down time during play. Each patient you encounter requires various techniques, from blitzing viruses and suturing up wounds, to performing delicate skin grafts and even fixing broken bones. It makes for a ridiculous blend of pressure and fun as your trembling fingers and sweating forehead would happily trade it all in for a simple game of Operation. It looks lovely too, retaining the distinctive cel-shaded look of The Wind Waker and its mechanically rich, offering new items to use, while the Phantom Hourglass of the title gives you a unique way to explore the vibrant game world.
For the first time, the DQ franchise has an action-oriented title where battles take place on the field much like "Crystal Chronicles". A serious lack of famous DS classics in there.
