It is easy to get "lost" if you don't at least get past the initial base building part in the main mission. Best to not ever get rid of that initial base, even if you decide you hate the location. Otherwise you can end up with "mission out of range" issues or being give locations that are in the middle of space. Just downsize it to a teleporter and a shack if it is not your cup of tea.
