All rights reserved. Emin Ceylan, an agricultural engineer, and his mother, Fatma, in the North Aegan seaside town of Yenice. The area lacked a high school, which sent Ceylan and his family back to Istanbul to complete his secondary education. After graduating in , Ceylan studied chemical engineering at Istanbul Technical University, but the political unrest of the period prompted him to leave the school and enroll in the electrical engineering department at Bogazici University in The university also had active photography and cinema clubs, both of which quickly captured his interest. Upon graduation in , Ceylan joined the army in order to complete his compulsory military service. During his month stint, he decided that he would give up engineering to pursue a career in film, and began studying cinema at Mimar Sinan University.

Play trailer Climates Nuri Bilge Ceylan was born in Istanbul on January 26th, In , he began studying chemical engineering at Istanbul Technical University, in a context of strong student unrest, boycotts and political polarization. In , he switched courses to Electrical Engineering at Bogazici University. There, he developed a strong interest in image, entering the photography club at the university. This is also where he fed his taste for visual arts and classical music, by means of the vast resources of the faculty librarians.

He completed his primary education in Yenice before finishing high school in Istanbul. During the s, photographs by Ceylan were featured in magazines including Gergedan ; in , he won a national competition to represent Turkey at an international event organised by Kodak , and took part in shoots in London and Kathmandu. After returning to Turkey, he completed military service in Mamak , Ankara. After the production of Seviyorum Ergo Sum , Ceylan bought the camera used to film it and subsequently used it in the production of his own short film, Koza English: "cocoon". The film, which Ceylan directed, wrote, and produced, became the first Turkish short film to be screened at the 48th Cannes Film Festival in
