Oak hill lawn cemetery and crematorium
Construction of Hatfield's new crematorium is on track to be completed this summer after councillors visited the site to check on progress. The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Cllr Barbara Fitzsimon and leader of the council Tony Kingsbury, were among those to tour the facilities at Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium, which include a larger chapel and provides facilities for both burial and cremation funeral services. The existing buildings at the entrance to the cemetery have been replaced with oak hill lawn cemetery and crematorium landscaping and areas for burial, while the bereavement services team will be based at the new complex. Our Client identified a need for improved cremation services to address increased waiting times and distances required to travel in the area. The proposed development will provide a new larger chapel, for both burial and cremation funeral services, as well as combining the facilities needed for both cremation and burial services. The chapel will also serve as a space for remembrance services throughout the year. The existing buildings at the entrance will be replaced with new landscaping and areas for burial. The proposed crematorium building will sit below the tree line when first viewed and is approached from higher ground, thus minimising its impact on the openness of the greenbelt. When visitors enter the site and reach the top of the ridge, rather than finding themselves amongst a group of buildings as they currently do they will be in an open area, landscaped with new planting and trees.

The scheme comprises a new single storey Crematorium with integral Machinery Store to the south western corner of the existing Lawn Cemetery, operated by the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. This will be accompanied by new associated car park and supplementary roadside parking within the cemetery curtilage. Some road network alterations and extensive landscaping will form part of the scheme, including the addition of two surface water attenuation ponds. Steel frame with a profiled metal deck roof; timber and glulam frame. On the porte-cochere, there is stone cladding. The proposed crematorium is a predominantly braced steel frame with a profiled metal deck roof. To form the chapel, a series of exposed glulam frames will be introduced to create an architectural feature and to support the upper timber roof. To achieve the double height along the chapel, a timber stud wall will be introduced between the lower profiled metal deck roof and the upper timber roof. The timber stud wall will be supported off the steel frame at its base. To form the balcony area inside the chapel, a timber joist floor will be introduced. The timber joist floor will be supported by steel cantilevering beams. The proposed substructure solution will consist of a mm thick RC raft slab with a mm deep edge thickening. Deep excavations for pond and large attenuation tanks. Works adjacent to existing boundary ditch and in area of surface water flood risk. No works are currently planned to the mausoleum, burial plots or the memorial.
