Ocean acrylic painting

To paint the waves in my waterscapes, ocean acrylic painting, I use three different painting techniques — and sometimes all three are included in the same painting! These are also the same techniques I use, with slight variations, to paint those fluffy white clouds in my skies. Ocean acrylic painting favorite technique is one that I invented and is quite unusual.

Mix your acrylic colors to get roughly the same colors you see here. You want a cream color, a light aqua, and a darker aqua. Layout the sky using these three colors and your M1 blending brush. I used some viridian green as part of my color mixing, which is from my set of acrylic paints, but you can easily replicate the color with a regular set of primary colors. Just get them roughly in the same range. Add a line of the second-darkest shade right beneath it. Then go beneath that with the slightly lighter green shade you just mixed.

To keep the horizon interesting I add a few small islands in the distance, also using the darkest sky colour. For the sea I have mixed blues in a range of tonal values by taking the sky colour and adding varying amounts of French Ultramarine, Viridian Green and Titanium White to it. I then dry the sky using a hair dryer and mask off the sky using masking tape to ensure the horizon it remains horizontal. The sea is blocked in, in exactly the same way as the sky except this time don't bother to get perfectly smooth shadings. We will now add waves to the water. I want them to run all the way across the canvas so I place a length of masking tape which I can use as a guide to keep my waves straight and parallel to each other. A wave doesn't break all at once, it tends to run along the beach gradually breaking from left to right or right to left.
