This instructable will teach you the process of restoring machinery, and how to disassemble and assemble a drill press. I had been looking for a drill press in about a month before I found the Knuth KB So I told him I was 17 years old and I needed it to make some prototypes for a very unique 3D-printer I was designing and offered bucks ;- He said we had a deal, and my dad, brother and I picked it up the next day. This was great since I have used all my money on the 3D-printer, now the only problem was its condition. Which was terrible by the way as can be seen in the pictures. I don't have a workshop and not even something you can call a worktable, which basically meant the drill press had to be in my room. Therefore it would need to look like new of course.

Since a machine obviously consists of many parts, we will have to disassemble the whole machine, before we can begin restoring each part. In the old machine shops I worked in, we used to take the belts down over weekends and holidays, and in muggy summer weather, we often took belts down overnight. This press was used by the Gaasch family of Harcourt over several generations from to crush grapes for wine and vinegar making, subsequently to crush apples and then press the pulp to make apple vinegar and cider. In order to remove the rust, you simply remove the rust with a wire wheel, and then finish it up with some kind of semi polish wheel, since the wire wheel probably is dirty. They are set up within one step of each other which makes the operation fast and easy. I drill my holes with my standard electric drill press, and countersink with my hand crank drill. After, well I can't remember the amount of time, 6 months or so, I knew that even in a fledgling blacksmith shop, a punched or slit and drifted hole was far more efficient. Sign Up.
