A documentary by SR Bindler called Hands on a Hardbody was about the annual sleep-deprivation endurance contest run by an East Texas auto dealership, where 24 people compete to win a brand-new Nissan Hardbody pickup truck by keeping at least one hand on it for the longest continuous time. US festival audiences found something sympathetic and humorous about these stoic hopefuls and there was even a stage musical version with a happy ending. But this is audaciously structured with a sombre coda sequence placed after the end of the contest. British actor Joe Cole plays Kyle, a competitor who is an unemployed local guy with a wife and baby daughter; he is desperate for cash and taking this contest far too seriously. They also look like a group of people under arrest, keeping their hands on the car where the cops can see them. As people faint or stagger away, Kyle faces-off with an obnoxious guy playing nasty mind-games that are even creepier than we suspect; after four or five days without sleep, Kyle fears with good reason that he is losing his sanity and enters a dangerous new mental state.

Thanks to the onslaught of 'Reality TV' over the last decade, we seem to have lost empathy for those whose lot in life has driven them to submit to acts of desperation in hopes of finding a way forward. Kyle Joe Cole, "Peaky Blinders" is a down-on-his-luck local guy with a wife and young daughter. Life is hard and he's desperate to improve their way of life. However, he's such an honest and good person that our impression is that he's one of those who just gets continually kicked while down. When Joan Carrie Preston, "True Blood" , in her role as Public Relations Director for Boudreaux car dealership, announces a contest to win a new pickup truck, Kyle sees his chance to make things better for his family. A lottery is held to select twenty people who will compete for the vehicle in a test of endurance: they must keep one hand on the truck at all times, taking only short breaks with no chance for sleep. The expectation is that this could last hours, with sleep deprivation and psychological willpower certainly in play. It's a diverse group of twenty, and mind games are afoot, especially by one of the participants, Kevin Jesse C Boyd Since watching people stand around touching a truck lacks cinematic drama, director Gunther infuses some of Joan's less-than-stellar personal life, while also offering tidbits on some of the participants. Much of the focus is on Kyle, even as exhaustion, hallucinations, and health issues begin to creep in. The opening segment provides us with a Google Earth-type lay of the land in this rural community, and we quickly understand the stress of poverty - a stress that is eating away at Kyle.

Armed only with their dreams and determination, the participants forgo basic human needs to stand around the pickup truck for days to beat out their competitors. All for the benefit of an enthusiastic audience and the glare of the local media who turn up each year for the car dealership's popular publicity stunt. As the blisteringly hot days and long nights of struggle, exhaustion, mind games, hilarity, loss of control and insanity add up, only one winner can drive away with the truck. Each contestant has their own reasons for joining the contest, and as the hours tick by, their humanity is laid bare.

Now comes One of These Days , in which Bastian Gunther, a German director who has worked for years in Texas, incorporates a more recent episode into the scenario, focusing on the strain endured by one contestant in particular. The real contest took place in Longview, Texas. Joan appears to use Hands On as a substitute for other kinds of human connection, putting up an enthusiastic front that wears some people out. The film is light on some details here — aside from the guy who listens to music and annoyingly slaps the truck in time with it, why is nobody fighting boredom with a smartphone?
