Maktaba is a brand new bookstore located on St-Paul Street in Old Montreal, officially open for the first time today. Sundus Abdul Hadi : Maktaba started being dreamed up about five years ago after I rented a pop-up on St-Laurent Blvd for a week-long exhibition and series of events I curated called Take Care of Your Self, involving the work of 28 artists of colour whose work intersected with care and struggle. During that week, I heard from so many visitors that this ephemeral exhibit was a much needed space, and filled a cultural void that was necessary to occupy in the city. After the exhibit closed, a seed was planted — and it has now flowered into Librairie Maktaba. The concept itself is a bookshop and boutique, where we can be surrounded by the work of people who inspire us, and therefore offer that inspiration back to the city. The floor seating majlis area is a dreamy space where I imagine many important conversations will be had, and moments of inspiration being sparked. LC : How would you describe Maktaba as a bookstore?

After struggling to find parking in the heart of Old Port, I sat down with Sundus Abdul Hadi , an artist and the founder of the bookshop, to talk about the space and the role it plays in the community. The bookshop opened this June, and it serves as an alternative to traditional bookstores and large retailers. What did your path look like? I put out two books during the pandemic. I entered the world of books as a writer and as a person who is connected to a really beautiful community of writers, readers, and artists. With Maktaba, the idea started with the question: what does it mean to create a space for us? A space for not just me, Sundus, the artist and the writer, but my greater community. I always say that even though Maktaba is a business, it is first and foremost an art project and a space — a cultural space. MD: Can you tell me a little bit about the boutique in general and about this new merch drop? Yassin has been making merch for 15 years. Each T-shirt he makes is a conversation-starter. So we wanted to approach the Maktaba boutique the same way. We wanted to make wearable messages. That was the approach. The original image behind the drop is from a vinyl record that was gifted to us by the General Federation of Iraqi Women.

The author accepted the invitation on the condition that he would not receive any remuneration in return and that his speech would be broadcast without the intervention of any authority. The title of this weekly program was Maariful Quran Knowledge of the Holy Quran and it was broadcast every Friday morning on the network Radio Pakistan. The new authorities then shut down their most popular program. Thousands of Muslims listened to it not only in Pakistan, and India but also in Western and African countries. These requests prompted the esteemed author to revise these discourses and add passages that were not included in the original discourses.

This website aims to provide access to Islamic discourses and literature sources to academic students, researchers, concerned professionals, Muslims, concerned non-Muslims, and anyone interested, regardless of religious affiliation. I have also included some books on other religions and disciplines. I have also uploaded content and books of Islamic theology in other languages like Turkish and Luganda. I have, up to now, presented more than English books; there are also books from other languages, but my primary focus was English. Originally I created this website for my reference due to the difficulties I faced when I was doing Masters of Arts in Islamic studies in the English language. During that time, I had more than books of Islam in Arabic in my library.
