From inmates to corrections officers, there have probably been more deaths on the Orange Is the New Black series than you realize. The ways they happen, though, are very, very different.

Orange Is the New Black was one of Netflix's first widely popular and critically acclaimed original shows. The highly influential series was also inspired by a true story, adapted from Piper Kerman's memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison , about her experiences at a minimum-security federal penitentiary. The series brought attention to America's broken prison system and the corrupt privatized facilities. It humanized prisoners and painted them as lost, forgotten souls rather than dangerous criminals. It also highlighted that even when a prisoner finally gets out, they are set up to fail on the outside and, more often than not, find themselves back in prison. The character-driven dramedy never held back its punches. Piper Chapman, the main character of Orange Is the New Black , quickly learned that Litchfield Penitentiary was an entirely different world with entirely different rules.

With a collection of incredible characters at its center, the show was ground-breaking in a number of ways. With so many at its heart, it was inevitable that not everyone was going to make it through. Of course, we had to start with the obvious choice. The delightful, wide-smiled Poussey Washington. Whether spending her time making sure to bring as much positivity to her fellow inmates lives as she possibly could, or struggling with alcoholism, her story was endearing and heart-wrenching. When CO Bayley suffocated her to death during a peaceful protest in season 4, the effects of her personality and the remainder of her character were felt throughout every episode that followed. Whether it was through her heart-broken friends or the pollical outrage that followed, Poussey might have ended up as the most immortal character of the entire show. After her attempt at escape, it seemed for a few moments like Vee was going to get away with it all. Luckily, Rosa was on hand to brutally clatter the prison van into her as she attempted her daring escape. We all knew what would one day happen.

Poussey's death was egregiously handled, and little to no justice was served — a fact that festered among the inmates and was a large contributing factor to the start of a prison riot in season 5.

Were Season 5's endings what the inmates really needed? Read at your own risk! Or did they? The fifth season of Netflix's acclaimed drama also included a couple of casualties, but this time they were prison guards. And their deaths could have long-reaching implications among the prisoners.

Each episode in Orange Is the New Black 's seven seasons featured flashbacks of a different character's background and showed what led them to prison.
