Pauper Commander, like Commander, is a multiplayer format typically played in pods of players though 1v1 is also fairly popular. It has been around since the early s with varying rulesets. The most universally accepted rules are that each player starts with 30 life and plays a deck of 99 unique common cards excluding basic lands headed by an uncommon creature that is the deck's commander. Otherwise, the rules follow those of Commander. This means cards that have only appeared at the common or uncommon rarity in online sets such as Chainer's Edict and Bastion Protector are legal to play. You can use the Scryfall search engine to find a card's rarity from any set.

December 18, by DougY. Did you know that Wood Sage is the only uncommon creature that lets you name a creature card? Pro-tip: Name Persistent Petitioners. Pauper EDH is much like the more-solidified format of Pauper, in that it has a simple deck construction rule: your deck may only contain cards that have been printed at the common rarity at some point in the history of Magic. Where it differs is that it also tacks on some rules from Commander, namely the singleton, card deck size, and the command zone rules. Only, there's an issue. The list of common commanders is horrendously small, not even allowing for most color combinations. To get around this, the creators decided that you could use an uncommon creature as your commander instead, since they were already special anyhow. At the time, however, there were very few uncommon legendary creatures, and so they expanded it out to every single uncommon creature in the history of Magic. This slight variation in deck construction has led to a lot of excitement over the years, as people got to choose their favorite uncommons to build around. With the printing of Commander Legends , however, Pauper EDH got a gift that has created a renaissance in the format: Partner commanders. While a lot of folks have argued that the recent plethora of uncommon legends should have the format moving toward legendary creatures in the same fashion as Commander a position that I vehemently disagree with , it's a bit of a moot point when it comes to the uncommon Partners , as they both are eligible commanders and physically say on the card that you can use them as your commander.

Hello, everyone! Welcome to another installment of Shower Thoughts , the series that proves Magic isn't pay-to-win. In this week's installment, I'll be showcasing ten nonlegendary pauper commanders for you and your friends to try. The biggest difference between EDH and PDH pauper EDH is the commander can be any uncommon creature throughout Magic 's history; in other words, they don't have to be legendary, giving you a total of 4, commanders to pick from, and if you exclude uncommon legends, you're left with 4, uncommon creatures to build with. The other major changes are life starts at 30, and commander damage is down to 16 from Cards printed at both common and uncommon can be in the 99 or your commander. A popular example would be Gray Merchant of Asphodel , which has been printed at both rarities, and if you decide to build a Background commander, the Background needs to be uncommon too.
While Magic has more than a few sanctioned formats, there's no reason you shouldn't make your own. Want to get into PDH? This is the guide for you! Pauper Commander is a variant of the Commander format. It takes many of EDH's core rules — card decks, commanders in the command zone , color identity , and the singleton format—but it applies rules that primarily affect card legality, namely in that any uncommon creature can be your commander and every card in the 99 must have at least one printing at common. Pauper Commander is great for a few different kinds of Commander players. First and foremost, the brewers! The rules of Pauper Commander allow you to play any uncommon creature as your commander , regardless of its legendary status. This vastly opens the space of what you can do. Sure, you lose out on 4- and 5-color combinations, but you get so much more.

Building Commander decks is an expensive hobby. Where to start? With over uncommon creatures and an insurmountable number at common, how are you supposed to pick a commander?

Finally, let's actually make our board unblockable with Barrage of Boulders , which is also a board wipe against small token decks. Unlike Young Pyromancer or Murmuring Mystic , Iconoclast cares if you're casting noncreature spells, not just instants and sorceries, so any artifact ramp, cantrips, or even enchantments will make you tokens. Similarly, Wayfaring Temple 's access to plentiful Proliferate triggers is sure to make you both tall and wide enough at the same time to knock players right out of the game. That's right, this is gonna be one of those lists made up of smaller lists! When deciding what creatures to add, I started with all of the Ninjas that feature the ninjutstu ability. If you love value, whether it be card draw or making tokens, then you'll love Soulherder as a commander. While Skull Prophet could be a lot of general Golgari-type fun, the real heavy hitters in our 10 slot are a lot more build-around. Next is one of my favorite creatures in the deck, Arcbound Tracker. Like Commander, groups may choose to include or exclude certain cards but most games follow the standardized rules from the PDH Home Base.

Well, let's punish them for sacrificing everything! Hopefully I've done enough here to at least pique your interest in a new format that can also just be a way to build for lower-power levels, but it does occur to me that I might not actually be your introduction While our number of three-color commanders has increased to a total of three, neither Sacellum Archers or Orcish Healer are very compelling. Don't forget that Mistmeadow Witch can protect itself in addition to racking you up value! Instead of rehashing an in-progress list, however, I figured it would be fun to highlight a format that not everyone is aware of, while also listing out what might be some of the best options for it in brute force fashion. Nailed it.
