In these stories, while the Stranger's past remained a mystery, the writers added a semi-regular cast of characters for him. The stories hinted at a romantic attraction between the Stranger and Craft, but he eventually left her, deciding she could not be part of his life, convincing her he had been killed in their final battle against the Dark Circle. Doctor Thirteen, dropped along with the reprints, was given a back-up series here as of 12 March-April which morphed into "The Spawn of Frankenstein " in 23 January-February The second volume originally ended somewhere along the months of February or March within the year or , with a total of 41 issues. In the later years of and , a forty-second issue was added to the second series during the Blackest Night event, effectively a one-shot. Most of those short stories were written by Mike W. Barr; one was written by Paul Levitz. These were mostly morality tales in the style of The Phantom Stranger vol. One two-part story explicitly connected with the continuity of vol. After the backup series ended with 13, the Stranger appeared in the main story of Saga of the Swamp Thing
The Phantom Stranger played a major part in guiding Tim Hunter through time to show him the history and nature of magic. In the pages of Shadowpactthe Phantom Stranger has adopted the role of narrator. In his phantom stranger appearances he was portrayed as a character much in the same vein as the narrators in horror comics such as Madame Xanaduphantom stranger, Cainphantom stranger, the Crypt keeper or Elvira but as opposed to their sort of detached roles, he became often involved in the stories to aid those in need.
The Phantom Stranger is currently starring in his own title. In the first issue a revised origin is shown to fit in with the changes brought forth by the new 52 where it reveals him to be a member of the Trinity of Sin alongside Vic Sage and Pandora. The man who would become the Phantom Stranger is the only one of the three who openly repents his actions, while his identity is never ultimately mentioned, it is heavily implied that he is Judas Iscariot. The first story shows him interacting with Jim Corrigan who in the process is gunned down and becomes the Spectre as a direct consequence. The Phantom Stranger learns from it, is how he is to earn forgiveness for his sins is to ultimately betray those he encounters either for their own good or that of the world, even if it horrifies him to do so. The Phantom Stranger's background has never been revealed in full.
