Photinia thin red
There are some 60 species that naturally occur throughout Asia but Photinias have become extremely popular in Australian gardens thanks to their spectacular bright red new growth foliage and their highly effective hedging qualities. Its size as a small tree, photinia thin red, rapid and dense growth, and colourful foliage make it a perfect choice for creating a hedge or screen for privacy in your backyard.
For hedging, plant photinias out 60—80cm apart —the closer together they are, the quicker they will fill the gaps to create the hedge. Allow them to grow for a full season before you start trimming them back to create a typical hedge shape. Prune once or twice annually to keep your Photinia tidy and to maintain its desired size. It's no slouch! More regular pruning will encourage new — stunningly red — growth.

Red tip photinia or Fraser photinia is a broadleaf evergreen shrub that can also be shaped into a tree. Red tip photinia gets its name from the striking red color of its young leaves. It is often planted as a hedge or privacy screen. However, fungal leaf spot caused by the plants growing closely together in hedges makes the plants die out, so it's no longer recommended to plant these shrubs as a hedge. Red tip photinia needs good air circulation, low humidity, an inch of water weekly given at the base of the plant, and thrives in full sun, although it can tolerate full shade.
