These anomalies can manifest themselves in several ways, including Dimensional Rifts, Storm Clouds, and the appearance of entire islands and other landmasses. Mysterious portals lie in the heart of many of these spots. Once every 24 hours, a daily Mirage spot will appear in Hoenn. The player can also encounter more through StreetPass. At the end of a day, all current Mirage spots will fade away. The disappearance of this marker does not prevent those locations from being visited if their conditions are met, however.

This allows for quick transport across all of the Hoenn region as well as access to other areas. You can also land at any time above a route, island or town that you have already been to. When you are in the sky, you will often see flocks of birds flying around. Once a day, you will find a random island on the outskirts of the Hoenn Region. These islands are relatively small but can be seen due to a distinctive red shine above them. These are the Mirage Islands. As each day passes, one island disappears and the next island re-appears. When you get to the island, you will find one or two items, with some rare items such as the Deep Sea Tooth being hidden with the Dowsing Machine. Some islands also house TMs for you to find.
