The polearm family of weapons was iconic throughout history and with good reason. They existed in nearly every early civilization and lasted on the battlefield for centuries. Additionally, if you are using a pike, you cannot benefit from the bonus action part of this feat. Polearm Master is one of those feats that entirely created a build archetype. The bonus action it grants allows you to add your attack bonus to the hit, stretching your damage per round. Taking an opportunity attack when creatures enter your reach is pure action economy and can be especially powerful when combined with the 10ft reach of a halberd or glaive.

A friend of mine decided to be a goliath barbarian and decided on a 15 to physical stats and 8 to all other stat approach, which if quite alright he even played himself roughly in that area and had quite a bit of fun becoming so drunk that he was poisoned in one encounter and such. Neither of the above players picked Polearm master, but as far as I can tell in both cases they would have doubled or tripled their damage with one feat. Also and this might be the reason why: Has anyone ever seen a magical polearm in dnd in a module or adventure, that is one not crafted by another player? Last edited by Mechaviking; at AM. Barbarian : Polearm users are usually defensive, patient, and precise. At fourth level you might consider boosting your Strength, polearm master 5e, or picking up the Sentinel feat, which almost breaks the game when paired with PAM.
Many folks refuted the power of Sharpshooter plus Crossbow Expert by naming a spell with the power to win an encounter. Animate objects 5th , mass suggestion 6th , and forcecage 7th make particularly good examples. My posts on the most annoying lower-level spells and higher-level spells add ammunition to this line of thinking. Still, a look at the spells-per-level tables shows that even high-level spellcasters rarely get more than one chance to cast one of these spells per day. But you get that crazy bonkers no more than once a day. Most commonly, folks tried to refute my point by citing other character builds they rate as even more broken.
In 5e Dungeons and Dragons, action economy is the key to success in combat. Because of this, feats such as Polearm Master and Crossbow Expert are staples of optimized builds by weaponizing the bonus action. Both of these are fantastic feats because they also include additional features beyond a bonus action attack, but if you just want a bonus action attack there are a handful of other options to consider. In particular, there is a weapon hidden away in the Eberron book called the Double-Bladed Scimitar. This weapon allows a bonus action attack via the Special property, which seems strong at face value. RPGBOT uses the color coding scheme which has become common among Pathfinder build handbooks, which is simple to understand and easy to read at a glance. The advice offered below is based on the current State of the Character Optimization Meta as of when the article was last updated. Keep in mind that the state of the meta periodically changes as new source materials are released, and the article will be updated accordingly as time allows. Crossbow Expert is a feat that allows you to fire a ranged attack in melee, ignore the Loading property of crossbows, and most relevant to this article, allows a creature to fire a hand crossbow as a bonus action after taking the attack action with a one-handed weapon, which includes the hand crossbow.

The Polearm Master is a feat that helps you keep enemies away from you with long-reach weapons. The polearm works with the glaive , halberd , and quarterstaff. This additional action allows you to make another attack with the other end of the weapon you are using. This additional attack deals bludgeoning damage and does little damage. You roll a d4 to determine how much extra damage your bonus attack deals. Of course, you can add your attribute modifiers like any other melee attack you perform. The second benefit of having the Polearm master feat in your arsenal is that it gives you the ability to provoke an opportunity from you when creatures enter your reach. Again this is only when you are wielding weapons like the pike, a halberd, a glaive, or the quarterstaff. This does not work with, for example, the long sword. Not a lot of people use polearm weapons to fight.

You are now free to step back another 5 feet no need in RAW, as your reach is only 5 feet and force it to enter your reach on its turn. It would be fairly easy to swing a said weapon or spin with a said weapon to slice at the person behind you without allowing the person you are engaged with to take a shot at you. Many players, especially beginners, tend to think anything powerful is fun, without giving wider consideration to the balance of the game and how that effects fun in the long term. Can a Pike be used with Polearm Master? U have druids that can change into any creature they have seen. One of the finest adventures on the Guild! Yes, you could adjust your grip, but constantly changing grips in a fight would put you at a disadvantage, and begs the question… if you have the time and technique to change grip, surely you could just strike out with the actual weapon end of the weapon again more easily?
