Pulley and tackle
A block and tackle [1] [2] or only tackle [3] is a system of two or more pulleys with a rope or cable threaded between them, usually used to lift heavy loads. The pulleys are assembled to form blocks and then blocks are paired so that one is fixed and one moves with the load. The rope is threaded through the pulleys to provide mechanical advantage that amplifies the force applied to the rope. Hero of Alexandria described cranes formed from assemblies of pulleys in the first century. Illustrated versions of Hero's Mechanica a book on raising heavy weights show early block and tackle systems. A block is a set of pulleys or sheaves mounted on a single frame. An assembly of blocks with a rope threaded through the pulleys is called tackle. The process of threading ropes or cables through blocks is called " reeving ", and a threaded block and tackle is said to have been "rove". They are common on boats and sailing ships , where tasks are often performed manually, as well as on cranes and drilling rigs , where once rove, the tasks are performed by heavy equipment. Note that in the gun tackle, double tackle and threefold purchase, both blocks have the same number of pulleys one, two and three, respectively whereas the Luff tackle and Gyn tackle have mis-matched blocks with differing numbers of pulleys.

A pulley is a device that can increase the magnitude of an effort force. With a single fixed pulley the effort force is similar or more due to efficiency loss to the load. The advantage with the single fixed pulley is that the direction of force is changed - it is possible to pull down instead of lifting up. With a single moveable pulley the effort force is half or more due to efficiency loss of the load. With a combined moveable pulley as above - the effort force is half or more due to efficiency loss of the load. The general effort force equation for a block or tackle to raise or pull a load can be expressed as. The calculator below can be used to calculate effort force in block, tackle or pulley construction.

It is widely being used in many fields and has eased the tasks of lifting heavy objects. Similarly, a two-wheel pulley splits the weight equally so that each holds only half the weight, allowing you to lift the same weight with half of the force. Step 3: Once you are done with the selection, a page will be opened where you can draw your diagram. It turns out that this sort of force multiplication is an extremely useful capability! How a Block and Tackle Works? Wow, so light and small. For your ease and convenience, we are going to mention some of them. This has been used by civil engineers and constructors. The system is so lightweight and compact, and I love that it comes with bags to hold everything including rope. Why Block and Tackle is Being Used? Once it is hung, the double tackle can be rigged. In order to raise a block and tackle with a mechanical advantage of 6 a distance of 1 metre, it is necessary to pull 6 metres of rope through the blocks. Link copied! Tools Tools.
