In April , the discussion and news aggregation website Reddit announced its intentions to charge for its application programming interface API , a feature which had been free since , causing a dispute. The move forced multiple third-party applications to shut down and threatened accessibility applications and moderation tools. On May 31, Apollo developer Christian Selig stated that Reddit's pricing would force him to cease development on the app. The resulting outcry from the Reddit community ultimately led to a planned protest, from June 12 to 14 in which moderators for the site would make their communities private [2] or would restrict posting. Following the release of an internal memo from Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and defiance from Reddit, some moderators continued their protest. Alternate forms of protest emerged in the days following the initial blackout. Multiple subreddits labeled themselves as not safe for work NSFW , affecting advertisements and resulting in administrators removing the entire moderation team of some subreddits.

After threatening to do so last week, Reddit has now removed the moderators of some of the subreddits that were protesting Reddit's new API pricing scheme. Some of these subreddits have new mods in the protesters' place, while other affected subreddits have been left unmoderated. Still others, oddly, saw their moderators reinstated. Reddit claims the moves are a response to mods breaking its Moderator Code of Conduct by allowing "not safe for work" NSFW content in previously "safe for work" subreddits. However, moderators who spoke to Ars Technica believe Reddit's actions are designed to silence their protests over the new fees. Reddit's Content Policy has a rule that says: "Ensure people have predictable experiences on Reddit by properly labeling content and communities, particularly content that is graphic, sexually explicit, or offensive. As of this writing, some of the subreddits whose mods were removed remain unmoderated. Other subreddits have new mods. Meanwhile, the feeling around the general mod community is one of disgust, while some are seriously considering abandoning their volunteer posts or have already done so.

While most subreddits that went dark to oppose the website's API changes are now live and active again, some moderators aren't done protesting the changes on the platform. By allowing their subreddits to be filled with posts deemed not safe for work, the moderators have made sure that Reddit can't monetize them. NSFW subreddits haven't been eligible for ad targeting in years , and the website doesn't allow ads for adult-oriented products, as well.
